The writing is so good that I didn't realize until 400 pages in that the FIRST PERSON NARRATOR had never been named. (It may be a sign of my stupidity as well.)
Typical Smith, with sprawling subjects and landscapes, complicated relationships and a beautiful, heartbreaking ending. ❤

Enjoyable, thoughtful, tender, and raw. ❤

This was just delightful. I love how Rainbow picks snippets of recent history to set her books---in this case, during Y2K. I love her curly-haired heroines. And the part about Lincoln needing years to get over Sam. A precious book! ❤️

Just read it. My life gets more complicated as I grow up, and Elena's life is NOT what she ecpected. The characters really come into their own here, for better and for worse. On to the final installment!!! ❤️

As a kind of farewell I gave him a half smile, waving my hand as if I were holding a pen. It was a plea, it meant: you know where I live, write to me, please. But he had already turned his back."

I mean, it was good until the end---which was very Scooby-Doo to me. I just don't like it when cornered villains explain themselves and their detailed thinking processes. GREAT characterization, though. Gotta love a book that teems with female rage.

Staying on the #FerranteTrain until the end! Things pick up for Elena and Lila in volume two, and again, there's a delicious cliffhanger at the end. This writing is unlike anything I've ever read. ❤️❤️❤️

I enjoy a good productivity book, and though this is not a revolutionary one, it has challenged me to get up earlier and make better plans and organizational goals. Quick read for anyone in a slump.

Grown-ass lady over here says, "Squee, it's so precious!" Definitely YA but laugh-out-loud funny and oh-so sweet. Mad props to RR, who's teaching the young kids about the Smiths, batteries, and gym suits. ❤️❤️❤️

Did anyone else ever watch this kooky anime version of "Little Women" as a kid? I stumbled upon it tonight on YouTube, and it's exactly how I remembered it!

I decided that my friend needed a copy of "My Brilliant Friend." And in the meantime, I'm carrying on with the Neopolitans! ❤️

I'm deep into 8th hour of #24in48 but I'm not sure my cat will make it 😂

Finished this up today for the #24in48readathon. Cline is masterful at exploring the interior life of a teenage girl, and the everyday pressures and judgments that trap them. Though the end was disturbing, I wasn't totally enthralled with the cult plot. I'm wavering between a "pick" and a "so-so" on this one. Also, all the men were terrible. Just terrible! (Except for Tom.) #24in48

The girl wasn't beautiful, I realized, seeing her again. It was something else. Like pictures I had seen of the actor John Huston's daughter. Her face could have been an error, but some other process was at work. It was better than beauty.

I've read a handful of Dan Brown books, and this was my least favorite. The plot had a couple of solid twists, and the premise is super promising; but the ending is so rushed and unsatisfying that it made the journey to that point feel a bit worthless.

I get it now. I'm on the Elena Ferrante train and can't get off. It's a story of female friendship, rivalry, poverty, and restriction. And the ending will break your heart. Can't wait to pick up Book Two!
