I'm starting to think that maaaaybe Octavia Butler could see through time and that's why her books are so good.

If you're in the mood for some excellent feminist literature that deals with some heavy themes, you've got to read this. It's also an excellent warning label to carry around.
I started this series on our honeymoon, so it seems only fitting that it's what I was reading when our daughter was born. Beautiful crossworlds fantasy with a diverse cast of compelling characters and an exciting story that didn't feel like I'd read it a million times before. I liked book one, LOVED book two, and book three was the perfect end. One note: If possible, go right into book 3 from book 2, or at least refresh your memory!
This was so good! I've always loved dystopia, but recently they've often felt either completely ridiculous or way too realistic and current. This one strikes a nice balance--it feels possible without remotely feeling like we're already there. I loved Fan's hope, the questionable nature of the narration, the steady and calm pace, never knowing whom to trust...it all just worked together. I definitely look forward to reading more by this author!
I always finish books, even if I'm suffering, but unless someone can convince me this gets good after page 108 I'm done. I'm guessing this is what happens when there are no women on the Nobel committee. (Paragraph breaks are also something I love in a book and this is just missing.)
So good that it's almost physically painful to be done with this series.

I've recently found that I love series where the books follow different characters and/or have large time gaps between them. When done well, it really lets each book be its own wonderful thing AND you avoid the slump that often happens in a book 2. Jemisin is amazing at this and I kind of want to go order everything she's ever written. (Also I love when books match my mermaid hair.)

I don't think I've ever before finished a book and immediately gone out and ordered not only the next one, but the entire rest of the series. I did that here. Bits kept reminding me of Dune, but really it's unlike anything I've read before. If you like fantasy, court intrigue, complex worldbuilding, meddling deities, and/or kickass women, you should check this out.
