The Invention of Sound | Chuck Palahniuk
post image

Everyone wanted to have an effect. People spent their lives trying to get a laugh. Or to seduce an audience of strangers. The goal was to commodity something, repeat it, sell them, these most intimate of human drives. It meant turning people's basic humanity into something that could be bought and sold. From fast food to porn, this was power.

1/5 Stars. TW: rape

I posted before about the beginning being difficult to follow with so many changing time lines and points of view. I chose to power through because the premise was interesting.

Unfortunately I made it about a 1/4 of the way through the book only to find a description of a ghost raping a 12 year old. That's an immediate DNF for me. There were other options to show that ghosts can hurt people. Rape is not a good plot device.

My WIP may be a thriller novel, but I've already published a 90 minute self help book. Lessons from a Hula Hoop was born out of my journey of embracing joy and play as an adult. Available now on Amazon as a paperback and Kindle ebook.

How I feel about Ninth House thus far:

I can see why people give up due to the jumping timeliness and POV right off the bat. That's a lot to track in the first few pages of a book. That said, I find the premise sufficiently intriguing to attempt to push past that.

Will keep you updated.

Lucy_Anywhere Stick with it - this is one of my fave reads so far this year! 4y
meganspeece @Lucy_Anywhere this seems to be one of those books that people either loved or hated and not much in between. I'm definitely here for the story, so we'll see how I feel at the end. :) 4y

Mehso-so

A slow burn to a series of surprising (and ridiculous) twists that weren't all good. Plus the change in character of my favorite murderous psychopath. You Love Me does not land in the 5 star category with its predecessors. (Full review at meganspeecewrites.com)

Taking a quiet moment before work.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through this one. I adored You and Hidden Bodies, but You Love Me just isn't keeping me as enraptured. Will update when I've finished the book.
