Vessel: A Novel | Lisa A. Nichols

Mehso-so

A six-person mission to another galaxy returns home with a single survivor who doesn‘t remember what happened in this sci-fi tale. It was so engrossing I read it in a single day but I found a few of the interpersonal relationships implausible and for a moment thought the ending was a cliff-hanger.

“On the day of my consult, I helped C. back the Ford our via hand gestures from the sidewalk. As I leaned against a parked car, hands up, two young men walked by. The attractive, curly-headed one turned his head as he passed. Yes, I thought, our eyes meeting, you may think I‘m hot, but I‘m also a rotting corpse. Sucks to be you, sir.”

Got this from the library today and already halfway through - it‘s a succinct story of his young life as a trans man. (Though he‘s British and his casual references to education keep throwing me.)

I love that though Brown told the whole story of the Donner party and their tragedy, he focused the lens through a single, specific woman. I had no idea the details of this tragedy and like so many, it happened because so many different choices were made. Also provides interesting (I swear!) cannibalism facts for parties.

Went into this blind and was pleasantly surprised how much the story of a California family and their relation to their aging patriarch engaged my interest.

A deft interweaving of history and science and the terrible impact of natural disasters on lives and psyches. I had heard great things but this definitely surpassed my expectations.

I had less empathy for the dinosaur hunter at the center of this true story than the author but the informative dips into Mongolian politics, the history of fossils, and all the people interwoven into this international tale made the book well worth it.

The idea of a male podcaster tracking a missing girl with a dead sister could go terribly wrong. But Ms. Summers handles every twist perfectly. My favorite ending of a novel this year.

I honestly can‘t tell if I love this series because it‘s good or if it takes me back to my childhood excitement of new Poirot novels to read!

Before reading One Long Night I was totally ignorant of the history of concentration camps. It always throws me how many things we're introduced to as a then-this-happened/someone-had-this-idea twist in school but when studying it's always a progression by different people in different places. Anyway, this book is amazing and I think I cried three times but I still highly recommend.

I started this book because I love female memoirs, though I've never seen a wrestling match or heard of AJ Lee. And I'm glad I did, as I found a thoughtful reflection on poverty, mental illness, and the struggles of changing a male-dominated industry.

I struggled to get through parts of Kym's tale - I have no knowledge of or particular interest in classical music - but I ended up emotionally enthralled with Gone. I loved the glimpse into her family's start in Korea and the struggle with their immigration to the U.K. And I totally ended up crying over a violin.

Bentley Royce is the youngest cast member on her family's reality show, Rolling With The Royces. (The rest of the cast being her mother, Mercedes; her sister, Porsche; and her brother, Maybach.) This satire is as all-in as it sounds and as someone who might have watched more than her share of VH1 in college, I enjoyed it!
