I'm torn about this one. Super readable and fast-paced, with lots of innocuous details to keep you guessing. Plus, cool Scandinavian location. BUT. The heroine has anxiety, and the descriptions of panic attacks totally triggered me. Plus, I don't love the whole anxiety = hysteria thing. And he plot holes... there were lots. It was still fun, though, and I read it late into the night because it was so addictive.

[DELETED] 3558467437 Well said. I found it addictive also. 8y

Zoinks! I am so, so glad I gave this one a second try. I fizzled at my first attempt (it happens, y'know?), but tore through it the second time. So amazing. Fantastic world-building, and really interesting ideas about what happens AFTER the end. I now have a girl-crush on the author.

Mayread Total crush on ESJM. Saw her at AWP and she's cool AF. Did you know she used to be a dancer & was home schooled? 8y
Megabooks @Skiles Whoa! Did not know that. This is an all-time top 5 for me, so that is cool to know!! 8y
amandaz @Skiles So did not know that! I cannot wait to see what she writes next! 8y

Whoa. No words. I usually have a hard time losing myself in nonfiction, but not this time. The writing is so, so beautiful and I can't help but feel that it was IMPORTANT for me to read. I'm so thankful for this book.

Hello, rad little book. This is a sweet, quiet book on a day in the life of librarian Isabel, who collects old postcards, shops for vintage dresses, and secretly loves her coworker. Manages to touch on war, travel, longing, and the peculiar joy of loneliness. Perfect for weekend reading.

sherrynuts Sounds like a lovely little book. Added to my list. Thanks! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Whenever I see this cover I have to stop. And every time I'm drawn in a little more. I already have my next read ready to go. Maybe I'll check out the audio for this one. 8y

Ok, this was SO good. I bought it on a whim based on a someone's Litsy haul (who was it?!) and I read it without reading the synopsis, which I never do. Wow. Fantasy based on Chinese mythology, really complex characters, and action-packed. The depiction of female friendship was so realistic, too.

StephTKO Alright, sold! 8y
Matilda Yay! (I posted the ebook sale the other day after I bought it) 8y
amandaz @Matilda Aha, it was you! Thank you! It was awesome. :) 8y

Archie comics were a huge part of my childhood, and were one reason I became such an ardent reader. I LOVE the new art style - it's truly gorgeous. I just really, really wish they'd axed the Betty-Veronica-Archie love triangle. Even as a kid, I didn't get why B & V put up with it.

MandyJohnson The new Archie is SO GOOD!!! 8y

Finished this puppy pretty quick. It was light and enjoyable, with TONS of historical detail. It's meant to be a view of the servants' lives during the events of Pride and Prejudice, and it had that "below stairs" vibe. Some parts dragged, but others were fascinating, so I'm giving it a win.

LOVE. This is my second time reading this, and all I can do now is wait for Susanna Clarke to write another book. Wheeeeen, Susanna? I want to read Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho, and I heard it was somewhat similar to Jonathan Strange. SIGN ME UP.

shawnmooney So interesting! Yours is the first positive review I've encountered on this book in many years… 8y
amandaz @shawnmooney I know, i feel like I'm the only one! But truly, I adore it. 8y
shawnmooney That's great! 8y

acg I just finished Sorcerer to the Crown, and I found the world-building to be not as thorough as JSaMN, but it is the first in a series sooo maybe Cho is just winding up. 8y
amandaz @seekingthespheres All I hear about Sorcerer are raves, so I'm down, but I'm waiting for the paperback. Clarke's world building is just...sigh. So good. 8y
Brooke_H Omg! I read half of this book, then had to put it down! I think this is one of those you either love it or hate it books. 8y

I know my tepid reaction to this collection is my own fault - I just wasn't in the mood. I can objectively see that Strayed's writing is beautiful, and I loved the obvious time and energy she put into answering each person's question, but it didn't really touch me.

Yay, found another historical British mystery series! This first in the series was quick and clever, and I found the two main characters surprisingly complex. Definitely going to be reading the next in the series.

TirzahPrice I read these books! But weren't they set in New York? I loved them. 9y
amandaz Oh my goodness, you're right. How did I mix that up? I blame it on being up all night seeing Beyoncé perform! 9y

Bailedbailed

At first, I was loving this weird, noir-ish thriller set in Japan, but it just kept getting darker and darker...I think I'm just too faint of heart for something this disturbing. The writing was fantastic - it kinda has to be to make you feel that icky. I just had to tap out.

Wtf did I just read? I think I liked it? It was like a labyrinth, and I think I got lost in it, but it was sure fun.

Brooke_H I really want to read that one! 9y
amandaz I loved all the "stuff" they came with it - the letters and postcards and clippings - but it was a little hard to pull the two storylines together. Let me know if you like it, Brooke! 9y
