I really enjoyed reading this memoir. If you like Wild Swans by Jung Chang, this is slightly more contemporary. While Jung‘s family was higher class, Xiaolu grew up a peasant. Both found their own way out of China. Xiaolu‘s writing is stunning and her story is remarkable. The audiobook is A+.
On display at my local bookstore Mrs. Dalloway's! My mom and I listened to the audiobook. Was happy to read it with someone as it begs to be discussed.
Saw the movie first and was delighted to discover the book has all the charm of the movie, though, I suppose really it's the movie that has all the charm of the book.
I don't normally buy books, instead I'm a big supporter of the library. Checked this one out yesterday and can't put it down. Decided I needed my own copy to pencil and highlight. Highly recommend if you have any interest in modern Russia. #reactionaryreadingbookclub
