This F book is a cute color coded creative take on the alphabet and colors that can be used in a RA. Goblins are trying on different clothing with different colors and prints, and they‘re not always wearing them right. This book covers UDL 2.3, 2.5, 3.3, 7.2. ESOL 4, 6, and 16. The resource I️ found is for younger children who still are working with the alphabet, but follows the alphabet/color(or coloring in this case) book set up.

Glad Monster, Sad Monster is a mix of NF, and F as it‘s talking about human emotions but using monsters to explain it. It covers UDL 1.3, 2.1, 2.4, 6.3, 7.3, and 9.2 as well as ESOL 11, and 18. It would go wonderfully as a DR where kids can express the emotions. It would also be great for younger kids to have included in a safe space area to work through their feelings. I️ chose an activity specifically to enhance this.

This HF, SR, book is about a young family living in the Great Depression. When Bonnie‘s father leaves after months of being unable to find work, she sets out to find him. Using her voice to call him home. It covers UDL- 3.1, 3.3, 7.2, 7.3, 8.2 and ESOL 4, 5, and 32. The resource is about the music from the Great Depression, specifically focusing on “Buddy Can You Spare A Dime” which is exactly what Bonnie needed people to do for her and her family

This NF, IR book is great to lazy days in the classroom when everyone is sleepy or for days when you‘re learning about where animals live. It gets students engaged with questioning about what it‘d be like to sleep in different animals natural habitats and has beautiful illustrations. Underground is a HF simple picture book that follows the story of a group of slaves who are trying to break free and make it north where they can be. It uses simple, simple sentences which lends it to be an excellent GR. It covers UDL 3.1, 7.2 and ESOL 14, and 27. The resource is for 5th up while the book is geared more towards emergent readers, however you can modify the lesson, or use the book as a jumping point for the main lesson.

This RF book could be used in a few ways. Namely as an LC book. When used with an author study this could really help them understand hank green better. It covers UDL 1.1-1.3, 2.5, 4.2 and 9.3. This B, IR book is about jazz musician, Mary Lou Williams. It would be great when doing a social studies lesson, or even a great edition to a black history month segment. If your focus is music, you could use this to introduce jazz even. It covers UDL: 3.1, and 7.2 as well as ESOL 4, 28, and 31. I️ found a resource that takes talking about a jazz musician and goes into what jazz itself is.

This is such a great book. And I‘m not just saying that because it was my LC book for class. It really is captivating and a great read. It could be a PR or IR book just as easily as it was a LC. It won the Newbery award for 2017, and the Texas Bluebell Award. I️ found a teacher resource with activities and assessments for 5-9th grade students

Mary Poppins is a F book series that follows (as you know) the story of children who need a nanny. Not just any nanny. Mary Poppins. With plenty of adventures to go on and lessons to be taught, the book gets underway quickly and holds your attention without any effort. It could be used as a LC book and resource I️ have for you is part DR, part activity based work from the broadway show based on these books by P.L. Travers

BFG | Roald Dahl

This F book was one of my favorites growing up. I️ must have read this at least a hundred times, if not more. It follows the story of little Sophia who is taken by a giant when she sees him. The BFG as we come to know him is kind, but tiny for a giant. And he doesn‘t eat ‘human beans‘ like his bigger brothers. I️ won‘t spoil it for you but this is a wonderful read. It could be a IR book or a LC book that‘s part of an author study on Dahl.

This RF/F book is one of kid‘s favorite Ronald Dahl books. This book, and others of his lend themselves to being a part of a AS on Dahl. This book alone has received the New England Round Table of Children‘s Librarians Award, the Surrey School award, the Millennium Children‘s Book Award, and the Blue Peter Book Award.

Ms. Cole on an Onion Roll and Other School Poems is just like it sounds. A P book that focuses on humorous characters and incidences that occur in or around school. It covers UDL 2.3, 2.5, 5.3, 7.1, and 8.2 as well as ESOL 4, 12, 16, and 27.

Native American Animal Stories is another TL book covering mythology of the creation of animals as well as explanations of why animals are/look/act the way they do. It lends itself again to a being a storytelling book as the “chapters” are short but cover full stories. Certain stories also lend themselves to being DR stories. #ucflae3414f17 UDL 2.3, 3.1 3.2, 6.3, 7.2, 7.3, and 9.3. ESOL 1, 4, 16, and 27.

DrSpalding Creating their own creation stories could be a fun addition to a Native American social studies unit as well. We need for our students to write often in order to support their quest of becoming proficient writers. 7y

This TL story would be a nice and easy read aloud or story telling book. It tells the tale of how the Indian Paintbrush flowers got their name from a young man named Little Gopher who brought the colors of the sunset to the earth so that he could paint it- and therefore memorialize it- on white buckskin. It covers UDL 3.3 and ESOL 16, (possibly 24 depending on your class), 34, and 46.

The Pilgrims' First Thanksgiving | Ann McGovern, Elroy Freem

This NF book would be a great introduction to the Pilgrims first year in the new world as it chronicles the time from boarding the Mayflower to just after their three day Thanksgiving celebration. It would be best presented as a dramatic reenactment with students acting out the story as it goes. The repetitive nature of the text as well as simple phrasing allows for a good amount of flexibility in the story‘s use.

DeannaT96 The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving covers 2.3, 2.4, 7.3, and 8.2. It also covers ESOL 4, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 34, and 42. I chose an activity where students can move through an actual timeline of the pilgrims‘ journey much like the book (in fact the cards can be modified to match exactly to the book). 7y

This book is about a young girl who becomes an American spy during the American Revolution after losing the brother (who had educated her and explained to her the importance of freedom and the rights every man holds) to the British army. She undergoes many challenges, but the biggest of all comes when she must get an urgent message to the leaders of the American army. A message that, if not received, could lead to the Americans losing the war.

It covers UDL 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2 and ESOL strategies 1, 5, 9 (if you provide timeline activities for the book especially), and 30 (again, timelines would be a great tool to implement for this reading). 7y

This RF book is absolutely wonderful! It follows the story of a man who finds meaning in caring for books in a library after his books and words are blown away in a hurricane. The message it sends is that books care for those that care for them. Because this book was first an animated short, it covers UDL 1.2, 1.3, 2.5, 4.1, 4.2, 7.3, and 8.2.

DeannaT96 By showing kids how to create their books they cover ESOL strategies 8, 16, 17, and 30. Personally I would present this book as a RA, but it also lends itself to IR with its multiple formats that make the book comprehensible to all learners of all backgrounds. 7y

Rachel Bright and Debi Gliori‘s book Side by Side is about a mouseling who has been left by her older brothers and sisters. She must go on a quest to find a friend- her true friend. Along the way she meets other animals from her home Wintermouse Woods who would be her friend, but she continues along. But she is in for a surprise when a quiet vole reveals he‘s been by her side the whole time.

DeannaT96 This book is great for a whole class read aloud in the first few days or even weeks of class. It can be followed by a short activity on friendship where students fill out a venn diagram of similarities and differences between themselves and a friend. 7y

DrSpalding The venn diagram helps students with classifying information. This is wise. As previously noted in class, I think this makes for a great read along with Quackers by Liz Wong. 7y
