Thrilling and tense, but not scary exactly. 3/5 on my scary scale. Great premise for a novel and Malerman is fantastic at keeping the tension building by using three different time periods. Not as literary as I normally like, but not that I was expecting it to be.

About half way trough this memoir about a gay son looking after his ill mother in small town America. It's bittersweet and wonderful

An odd novella that made me laugh at times until I got about half way and then it turns even odder. Not what I was expecting, but that's a good thing

Absolutely loved this. Family, forgiveness, tragedy, guilt. And so beautifully written. 5/5 stars

Eileen the character is damaged, awkward and lonely. The voice that Moshfegh creates her with is strong and consistent. I loved her. The setting of work and home and small-town life is also wonderfully realised. But Eileen the plot was rushed in the last 50 or so pages, with a few inconsistencies of character. Still I'd highly recommended it. 4/5
