NF, This book is about the life of slaves in New Orleans, Louisiana in the 19th century who are looking forward to Sunday where they can all meet in Congo Square. With this book, ESOL Strategy 17 can be used to give students more meaning to the book and help them understand what it is about. UDL 1.3 could be used with a read aloud.

This piece of TL is a version of the story Red-Riding Hood is about 3 sisters who encounter the big bad wolf dressed as their grandmother. The girls use their wits to lure the wolf from the house once they realize the wolf is NOT their grandmother. This book would be a great DR. UDL 8.3 could be used by having students work together to compare the original with this version or to perform a readers' theater.

Bwhitley222 ESOL #45 can be used to compare versions of this TL. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Stephanie5 This sounds like a nice spin on the original story that‘s great ! 5y

Pickpick

winner of the Scott O'Dell and CSK awards, this work of HF follows young Elijah, who was born in Buxton, Canada, a community of runaway slaves, as he learns what freedom really is when he witnesses the hardships of slavery and bravery carries a baby to freedom. This Novel would be a great book for a LC. An ESOL strategy that could be used is #16 inorder to ensure comprehension.

Bwhitley222 UDL 3.1 should be used to give students an understanding of the time period and the Underground Railroad. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Summerm I love the photo you took of this! This would be a great addition to any history lesson, to get the class and engaged in a great book 5y
Stephanie5 I think that this would be a great story for an LC and discussion questions would be great to go with the book. 5y

This animal fantasy picture book is a great story about friendship. Frog and Toad help each other as friends do through out the book. Frog helps wake sleepy Toad and Toad helps frog feel better when he's sick. This book highlights the importance of friendship. #ucflae3414su19 This book would best be taught as a read aloud.

DrSpalding Books with themes of friendships are important in the primary grades. Universal design for learning, UDL 3.2 is perfect as is English learner strategy 15. 5y

This MF is a tree's narrative about his interactions with animals and people. People come every year to tie pieces of cloth or paper to his branches and make a wish. When new neighbors move in, Red's job as the Wishtree is more important than ever. Resources and guides for the wish tree can be found at https://bookunitsteacher.com/wp/?p=5932. #ucflae3414su19

Bwhitley222 A UDL that can be applied to this text is 7.2, optimize relevance, value and authenticity.
EL. 44. Focus on thinking skills... because this EL strategy will help students to grasp the details of the book.
This book would be ideally taught as an LC.
5y
DrSpalding I agree wholeheartedly with 7.2. In today‘s society I believe we need to use books like this specifically in literature circles to allow students to discuss what‘s taking place and to deepen their comprehension regarding societal issues. 5y

Revolting Rhymes | Roald Dahl
post image
Pickpick

This strange twist of TL is poetry sure to make anyone laugh. Roald Dahl puts his own spin on 6 classic stories including Cinderella and the Three Little Pigs. The classics are given rhymes and surprise endings to match. Roald Dahl's website provides lesson plans and a reading to use with Revolting Rymes.https://www.roalddahl.com/roald-dahl/stories/p-t/revolting-rhymes

Bwhitley222 UDL 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information can be used because using the link students can listen to the book.
El. 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities can be used because students can listen and read and also read aloud this book.
I think this book could be read either choral or shared reading. #ucflae3414su19
5y
DrSpalding Utilizing the author website is wise. In regards to fantasy, you don‘t get much better than Dahl! Use his books as literature circle options as well however they could be used for shared reading too if you had multiple copies or a projector! 5y

Judy Moody Was in a Mood | Megan McDonald
post image
Pickpick

In this RF, Judy Moody is a funny relatable character for any student who's been in a bad mood. Judy is NOT looking forward to going to third grade and her new classroom. She is ready to quit until Mr. Todd, her new teacher, assigns an exciting project where Judy can show her style and individuality. This is a great teacher guide for this Judy Moody classic: http://www.judymoody.com/wp-content/uploads/JudyMoody_1_TeachersGuide.pdf
#ucflae3414su19

Bwhitley222 UDL 7.2 optimize relevance, value and authenticity is fitting for this book because being worried about going to a new class is relevant for students. The EL 30: encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships could be used to draw parallels between self and Judy Moody. 5y
Kendylleonard I love the Judy Moody series! They are great books to have that teach lessons for older students. They can definitely read them and relate them to their own personal lives. I love your resource as well! It has multiple lessons that you can use for comprehension. 5y
DrSpalding A helpful teacher‘s guide to implement this series! You now know that the author would make an excellent author study as well. 5y

Basher Science: Oceans: Making Waves! | Dan Green, Simon Basher
post image

This NF story is all about the amazing and mysterious ocean. Basher and his crew take on the high seas. They encounter many different issues on the high seas that has to do with the underwater world. Basher‘s understanding of science, teaches the reader more about the world under the sea. This would be best RA or IR. This link includes great teaching resources: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/basher-oceans-by-dan-green/

Bwhitley222 The UDL principle for this could be 3.3 (guide information processing and visualization). The EL principle 4 (link lesson to students‘ prior knowledge). #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding Based on your summary, I do not believe this is non-fiction. What other genre could it be? Is Basher a real person? This book would be helpful during a science lesson. 5y

This fun RF is a great book for students who aren't a fan of reading. Charlie Joe has gone his whole life without reading a whole book but now he realizes that in middle school, he will have a hard time keeping that up. He is a relatable character for the most stubborn readers. This book would be a good book for an IR. Teaching materials can be found here: https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/charlie-joe-jacksons-guide-not-reading

Bwhitley222 A UDL that can be used is 7.1, optimize individual choice and autonomy. This is a great book for a self selected read because the student can relate to the text. The EL strategy for the text could be #4, link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge. This can also be applied to their prior experience such as with reading. #ucflae3414su19 (edited) 5y
DrSpalding What a great choice! Sadly you are going to have many children that are not fans of reading and this book could help them to see the light!😀❤️📚 5y

This wordless work of HF by Henry Cole follows is the story of a young girl during the time of the Underground Railroad who discovers a runaway slave hiding in the barn. The pictures depict the connection that the young girl and the stranger make. I think this book would best be taught using S because of the lack of words and strong meaning that can be conveyed.

Bwhitley222 The UDL that can be used by this book is 1.1, offer ways of customizing the display of information. EL strategy 13, Use preview and review activities can be used with this book to discuss the meanings behind the pictures. Videos and teaching resources for this book can be found here: https://4ambassadorsofchrist.blogspot.com/2013/10/ppbf-unspoken.html

DrSpalding This is a powerful wordless picture book. Excellent choice! The images are gorgeous and truly beg for the story to be written. Some teachers use wordless picture books to have the children write what they see! Just another activity that could be used to teach writing skills and social studies content. 5y
