I don't read enough nonfiction. I've been trying to challenge myself to read more of it, and It's Trevor Noah: Born a Crime was a solid choice. There were a couple chapters that caused me to laugh out loud and several more that made me shake my head at how crazy it was.

I had a book club meeting with several students this morning and had great discussion. I highly recommend this book for middle grade readers to see perspectives that aren't often represented in literature. There are a lot of heavy themes, but that's why it's so important.

The Benefits of Being an Octopus by Ann Braden is a stellar debut and an important book to share with kids. It explores tough topics like poverty, emotional abuse, and gun violence while showing that there is always hope in the toughest of circumstances. Zoey is a strong character who learns how to stand up for herself, her friends, and her family when it matters most. I'll be discussing this one with kids next week for book club and can't wait!

This is one of the many reasons why I enjoy being involved in book clubs. I don't think I ever would have picked up Necessary Lies on my own, but it was a book club choice this month so I dug in. Wow, am I glad I did. My heart broke for the main protagonists and the situations they had to face, but it smiled for the strength and resiliency it took to overcome them. I highly recommend this story for all the historical fiction fans out there.

Loving this book so far! I'm about halfway through and already itching for the sequel to be released.
