so-soStarted out so well. Beautifully emotive setup. Then it just dried up. Slow. The story resolved into two needlessly separated converging arcs.There was a good spiritual punch-line after 26 chapters. Then a very unsatisfying finish. "Their marriage in name only was annulled." No. That was as bad as a logically inconsistent mystery reveal. Lynn should've killed Sam in the war and let Giselle rescue Joe. Because that's what actually happened.

pickThere is so much you can say about this one & my thoughts are so scattered…it‘s excellent. I‘ll start there. Set in a prison in 1945, this is the story of a prisoner (also a poet) & a guard (also a censor). The guard is murdered & what follows is a murder mystery but it‘s more than that. This fictionalized account of the life of one of Korea‘s foremost poets is about words, poetry, books, freedom, war, hope, truth, guilt, & much more. Very good.
pickStarts fairly exciting, but then slows way down to set the story up. Hang in there, the last half races forward. A dead body with an unopened parachute in almost the same uniform of soldiers quartered at Farleigh Field is found . Individuals from the area now work secret positions in various ministries and they are sent home to see what is going on. Are there spies in the upper class?
so-soThis was a fantastical, imaginative journey of a book. What interested me most was Jack‘s huge challenges in living with Addison‘s disease as well as his relationship & pursuit of Diana Playfair( whose side is she really on? U.S.,Soviet‘s?) & his relationship with FDR & his father. All fictional of course. #14books14weekd #TBR

Saturday morning coffee, baklava, and the Raising the Middlebrow bookclub (on GR) July selection. Which I‘m told the cover of this book is atrocious in keeping with the plot. And a fellow member observed Dickens portrayal of post war life is very different than Panter-Downes‘ portrayal in One Fine Day (June read). All of which makes me eager to dive to see what it‘s all about. Has anyone else read this one? Would love to hear your thoughts!
