Let Love Rule | Lenny Kravitz

Pickpick

Listening to Lenny tell his life story up through the making of his first album, Let Love Rule, was soothing. We see other than his tense relationship with his father, he had a family that supported and inspired his music aspirations. Lenny continually found himself caught between two cultures: black and white, NYC and Brooklyn, and Los Angeles and NYC. Lenny's stories about his past paint him as a nice guy here and, other than squabbles ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick with collaborators or his dad, he led a charmed life. With loving grandparents, his father a prominent, white business man, and his mother, Roxie Roker, a black actress who played Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, he had connections to the music world he desperately wanted to be a part of.
Since this book only covers the first 25 or so years of his life, we don't get a full picture of the man Kravitz is today. He tells us about his influences,⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick the people who helped him on his journey, and his desire to make funky music that doesn't fit into one little box, just like him. We hear about his early career as Romeo Blue and the early days of his relationship with Lisa Bonet. I liked that he took advantage of the audio recording to use music to share the lyrics and feel of the music he was making at the time. I can't rave about this, as it feels incomplete and almost a little safe. ⬇️ 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Hopefully there will be a follow up that brings us current and includes a few crazier rock & roll stories. He was no saint, but a fairly zen outlook doesn't make the compelling book in a world of fame and excess.

I‘m not very familiar with Loretta Lynn‘s music, but I really needed a book that #featuresamusician for #booked2019 and #writtenbyamusician for #pop19. This one looked most promising. The audio is read by Sissy Spacek and is excellent. Some of the stuff was hard to believe, like Loretta getting married at 13 and being a grandma at 29, but overall it was an enjoyable book. Now I‘m off to listen to some Loretta Lynn!

IamIamIam We used to watch this movie endlessly. My grandfather had a thing for Sissy Spacek! 🤣 Hope it's great! 6y
BridgetteM @IamIamIam I haven‘t seen the movie yet, but I really want to now that I‘ve read the book! 6y
Cinfhen I remember the film didn‘t realize it was based on a memoir!!! 6y

Phantom | Jo Nesb

Pickpick

Phantom is not the typical Harry Hole novel, going in a slightly different direction than his previous books. Harry Hole is 3 years sober 🎉🎉, and back in Oslo working to solve a crime his son is believed to have committed.

Phantom is all about addiction; the devastation of drugs and the ends people will go to, to fulfill their cravings. And it ends on a serious cliffhanger.

alisiakae Fits #Booked2019 #addiction, although I may substitute a non-fiction book for this prompt later in the year. 6y
Jeannineth It must be hard to be in law enforcement. I would think addiction, violence, and suicide are prevalent. I read The Snowman last year and enjoy Harry Hole but have not picked up another book by this author. 6y
alisiakae @Jeannineth I have been reading the series in order the last few months. And what you say is so true...addiction is more prevalent in high-stress jobs. My husband is a surgeon, and the healthcare field has one of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse as far as professions go. 6y

Cinfhen Jo Nesbo is a musician????? Really???!! Cool 6y
alisiakae @Cinfhen Yep! He‘s the main vocalist for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. It kind of explains all the musical references in his books! 6y
Cinfhen Wow!! That‘s so interesting! Thanks for sharing #LiveandLearn #EverydayIsASchoolDay 6y
