Nominated for the 2024 #WCCPBA I read this to all my classes and gave them an idea map for creating a definition of safety in their words because you can't share your feelings unless you feel safe. Their definition will be used for a character trait bulletin board. #underthedustcover

Don't get me wrong, this is a great book. A necessary read. It was nominated for the 2025 Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award #WCCPBA so I'll be reading it to 370 K-5 students. I think I'll start at the back, but it will lead to so many questions.

This may be the most exciting 2025 #WCCPBA nominee. It has volcanoes, mythology, and the tension you'd expect in a story about being stranded on a newly formed volcanic Island.

Bob is lifted out of his funk by a red jacket with a pocket full of fries. Nominated for the 2025 #WCCPBA, my first idea would be to have the kids make friend fries they can carry in their pockets.

Powwow Day | Traci Sorell

For Native American heritage month I read #WCCPBA Powwow Day by Traci Sorrell. We watched a couple of videos about Powwows because about 30% of my students indicated no knowledge of what a powwow is. They LOVED this https://youtu.be/eI2gnTZh0-I?feature=shared

mandarchy I've made it my goal to present Native American culture in the present. Since I'm a librarian and not a classroom teacher I have a lot more freedom in what I present since the learning goal is less specific. I was really shocked by how many students had never heard of a Powwow. Of 380 kids only one indicated they had a tribal affiliation. We are on Nisqually land. 13mo
TheBookHippie We have it in our third grade curriculum and now 6-12 will learn more and about the schools. It‘s so massively important. It‘s so shocking how much isn‘t taught. How wonderful you got to teach this way. 13mo
mandarchy @TheBookHippie the Powwow book or Powwows? I haven't looked at the national standards lately, but I know our teachers start teaching about local tribes in 3rd grade. 13mo

TheBookHippie @mandarchy we just passed a bill and massive money towards it so it‘s all fresh in my mind. 13mo
mandarchy @TheBookHippie that's good! 13mo
KathyWheeler The Poarch Band of Creek Indians, up the road from me, holds a two day powwow every Thanksgiving. It‘s open to everyone. I thought this might be the year I would go, but, unfortunately, I was sick. It‘s only $15 for both days. One day is $10. 13mo
mandarchy @KathyWheeler I think Powwows are more common east of me and that explains why my kids are unfamiliar. We are in the Salish tribal part of the world. 13mo

Student art after reading The Boy Who Loved Maps. I don't think they fully appreciated the friendship in the story and there were whispers that it was romance. But I sensed that the MC nearly broke out in hives from the antagonist's tendency toward fiction. My kids were deaf to me suggesting that the MC just loved something new that they usually wouldn't agree to try. Nominated for the 2024 #WCCPBA

I used the video where Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen read their version of BGG so that I could take a break. But I love reading the story. It's so fun to read trip trap trip trap trip trap and modify your voice for each goat. I read the Galdone version to the younger students. I'm always amazed by how many students come to elementary school never having read some 398.2s. Nominated for the 2024 #WCCPBA

Tamra My favorite as a toddler! I had the edition on the left. 😍 My grandpa read it ad nauseam to me. 13mo
mandarchy @Tamra you will love the new version, it's slightly more "mature". Menu items fly over the kid's heads. 13mo
Tamra @mandarchy how fun & imaginative! 13mo
Aimeesue That is such a great video! I rewatch it once in a while because it makes me smile 😊 13mo
mandarchy @Aimeesue I just love them both! 13mo

The kids loved how this opened up a chance to talk about how loud things can be annoying (or scary). 2024 #WCCPBA nominee. We designed our perfect parties on the back of our coloring pages. Older students noted the literal devices such as onomatopoeia.
