CatLass007 When I was in the 8th grade our West Virginia History assigned each of us to memorize and recite one of two poems. We just counted off 1-2, 1-2, and all the ones had to learn Joyce Kilmer‘s “Trees” and all the twos had to learn “Woodsman, Spare That Tree,” which was more than twice as long. I don‘t remember the poet. Then she started giving us extra credit if we learned and recited both poems. The verses from “Woodsman, Spare That Tree” (cont)⬇️ 2d

CatLass007 are right at the edge of my memory. I feel like I could recite it if I could just reach out and touch the words. I was just about to say that I can‘t even imagine remembering “Trees” but I just remembered the first line. I‘m not sure I could remember any more than that. It‘s been 50 years! 2d
dabbe @CatLass007 What a lovely story! I believe there is such a power in memorizing poetry or a monologue from something like a Shakespearean play. I still can recite “Immense et Rouge“ by Jacques Prévert because of my French teacher having us recite a poem in French! 🤩 2d
