Pickpick

This book was so impactful it might make you cry. Jacqueline Woodson is such an amazing author, and Rafael Lopez is a phenomenal illustrator, so the combination is out of this world! I think that this book would be a great read in the very beginning of the school year to read to your class because it might make many students feel more comfortable and safe in this new environment, and it can help you build a connection with your students

Emma_Barcena The genre is RF. This book is a New York Times Best Seller. This book would be a great first RA book of the school year. This is such a cute resource to use with younger students!

I came across this book, and I thought that it would be a book about trains, which it is, but it‘s more than that! It‘s actually a really great book that utilizes poetry through a free verse, and it is such a great example of the use of onomatopoeia! I would love to show students this book because I really think they would love to see this as a read aloud in a VERY dramatic way! I will definitely want to use this in a Language Arts lesson!

Emma_Barcena This genre is P. This book has received the Caldecott and the Sibert Award. This book would be a fantastic book for a RA. This is a great resource because this book has its own website!

I first saw this book at Barnes and Nobles and it immediately grabbed my attention! This book could be a bit content heavy for the younger grade levels, but it speaks about very important and influential women of our history and would be a great addition to any classroom library! I know students will be drawn towards the fun illustrations, as well as, the stories of these women! A great book to utilize in a history or social studies lesson.

Emma_Barcena The genre is B. This book is a New York Times Bestseller. This book can be used as a GR. This is a great resource to use for more biographical relevant information.

Emma_Barcena The UDL Principles 9.1 & 8.3 can be used to promote expectations and beliefs for motivation and to foster collaboration and community. The EL Principles 16 & 28 can be used to integrate speaking, listening, and writing activities. Also, provide students with biographies of significant men and women. #UCFLAE3414su20 (edited) 4y

DrSpalding English learner strategy 28 is perfect for biographies. The illustrations are certainly attention grabbing. I like the idea of dipping in and dipping out of this text; using historical figures that align to content you were teaching in social studies. Guided reading is probably not the best strategy for this particular text. They now have a male sequel to this book as well. 4y

This book made me laugh and it also kept me informed. This will be a fun read for students as they learn about flies and their purpose, and that they aren‘t actually that bad! As a student teacher it would be a fun activity to show the students this book during a science lesson.

Emma_Barcena The genre is NF. This book has not received any awards. This book would be good to use in a SR. This is a good resource to use to provide information to students about flies and to play some fun games.

This is an excellent piece of children‘s literature that gives an account from the author and her life as a young girl in the 1960s in the United States. This books is clearly very acclaimed as you can see from the many awards it has received! This is something that many students can read and learn a lot from, but also they can resonate with the author and her message.

This is such a fun book that will get students into reading poetry because it is genuinely funny! This book is collection of different poems that have been put into one book.

Emma_Barcena The genre is P. This book has not received any awards. This book would be great in a PR. I found this video that is an animation of this book, which I thought would be really fun to show students, so that they could get excited to read the book and also they could potentially reenact the poems themselves.

Julian Is a Mermaid | Jessica Love
post image
Pickpick

This beautifully illustrated book is about a boy, Julian, who‘s in awe of the women dressed as mermaids on the train, so he decides he wants to be a mermaid too! His abuela supports his dream, helps finish his amazing mermaid costume, and walks alongside him in the parade. This book, Julian is a Mermaid, is a RF book written by Jessica Love and a Jane Addams award winner! A must have, to teach children how to truly be themselves! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This is a great RA for students, I hope to use this book in my future classroom to encourage students that it is okay to be different; that makes you YOU! ESOL strategy #1 can be incorporated when asking students question about the text as you read. UDL 2.1 can be used by defining the vocabulary used before starting the lesson! (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 This resource: https://assets2.hrc.org/welcoming-schools/documents/WS_Lesson_Julián_Is_a_Mer... is a super interesting link to addressing gender at an elementary school level. It provides lessons and activities to support inclusion in the classroom! 4y
LauraLeighn This looks like an insanely cute book! I love your description of it, it really sells the book. The lesson to “okay to be different; that makes you YOU!“ is so important especially in elementary school, I love your ESOL and UDL strategy, great post! 4y

nquintus I love this book! It also won a Stonewall award for LGBTQ representation, so I agree that it would be a wonderful add to a diverse classroom library. Great choice, Emma! 4y
DrSpalding I agree this would be an excellent read aloud to emphasize the theme of being unique. Your universal design and English learner strategies work and your resource is a good one. I believe the sequel is about Julian going to a wedding. 4y

Looks like we‘re going to need more bananas! “Stop! Bot!” written and illustrated by James Yang, is such a fun light hearted MF story about a community coming together to find the stop that bot. The young boy‘s robot keeps going up and up, not even the giraffe can reach it and boy oh boy will you be surprise to see who stops that bot! This is a great book to do a DR to because of all the fun characters and little twists and turns. #ucflae3414su20

In this MF by Jonathan Emmett, we explore a humorous tale about a frog trying to weasel his way into a lavish lifestyle by tricking the princesses. While nearly everyone is wrapped around his slimy finger, one princess is not. Her name is Princess Martha and she has a plan but realizes soon that she must explore different perspectives to reveal the truth. This book is great for a RT.
