pickI enjoyed this inside view into the life of the mysterious Sally Hemings. She was kept a secret then, and she is still in the shadows of American History today. In these pages, we get a glimpse of what her life might have been like. She was Thomas Jefferson‘s misogynoir. She was an enslaved, Black woman. She was Sally Hemings.

so-soThis was an interesting look at a little-known chapter in US history.
The young USA was tired of getting harassed by pirates in the Mediterranean and were unwilling to pay tribute like other nations so they decided fighting them was the way to go.
I question some of the choices the author made with quotes from primary sources. Most seemed to be there just for “color” rather than adding any actual info.
pickOn the cover of this book is a quote from NYT bestselling author, Mark Adams, which perfectly captures the essence of this book, “A very entertaining book about a very complicated man.” I thought I knew about founding father Thomas Jefferson, but no, no I did not. This was an extremely interesting and thought provoking read that found the perfect balance of presenting hard facts but never feeling stuffy.
pickThis is the story of Martha (Patsy) Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jeffersons daughter, told from her perspective, based on letters and original sources. It focuses mostly on Patsy's devotion and protection of her father. A very good historical fiction. (see below for the rest)
