#catchingup on #septembowie #day22 - #thisisnotamerica
I feel like any use of this expression these days either has to be oblivious or ironic.
#septembowie #ThisIsNotAmerica Catch up from yesterday. This prompt made me think of alternative history or 'what if' novels. I read the tagged book about what if Japan conquered Hawaii after Pearl Harbor several years ago & finished American War recently with its second American Civil War. The other 4 books are in my #TBR stacks. I have to read books like these in small doses as any more it seems like it actually could be America & that's scary😱
#SeptemBowie
#ThisIsNotAmerica this is the fantasy world of Earthsea, one of the most popular and well-crafted.
And this us my brand new omnibus with all the stories. Bit intimidating. But l've been meaning g to read this series for ages
#SeptemBowie #day22 #ThisIsNotAmerica This is a photo I took from a lookout at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, my favourite place in the world. Henry Lawson, Banjo Patterson & Dorothea MacKellar all wrote beautiful poems about Australia.
I Love A Sunburnt Country,
A land of sweeping plains
Of rugged mountain ranges
Of drought & flooding rains
I love her far horizons
I love her jewelled seas
Her beauty & her terror
The wide brown land for me

Well of course I went with my own country! But I added Australia - our good friends and neighbours - for brownie points! We're two very different countries with two very different indigenous cultures. But both originally mapped by Captain James Cook. (Cant say we were discovered by him because he wasn't the first!) These are his journals 🤓
I'm using this for #ThisIsNotAmerica, even though it one day could be. #SeptemBowie
Set in a thrift store in Tokyo, I'd say this fits the bill for #thisisnotamerica. Not a lot happening, but the characters are great.

#thisisnotamerica #septembowie I bought this book at the Raise-A-Reader booksale. According to the inscription on the title page " This book may cause you to chuckle, snicker and even snort while reading " so I had to buy it. Now to find the time to read it ?
#ThisIsNotAmerica This is India, 1837, in the callous grip of the East India Company. A Watson/Holmes-esque duo (who start out at odds) are tasked with finding the awesomely-named poet Xavier Mountstuart, who disappeared while researching the cult of Thugee.
Lush descriptions, a flawless narrator, some twists I saw coming and some I did NOT which had me pounding my steering wheel and shouting expletives. Highly recommended on audio. #SeptemBowie
