'The Challenge Episode appears to us as a series of humiliations and discomfitures for the court which we feel as more comic than tragic. Despite the fact that the challenge is successfully met, the Green Knight departs from the scene as the victor in a kind of psychological warfare.'

'That the poem still has meaning for the reader today is because, though the vocabulary has changed, the conflict between ideal codes and human limitations still persists.' ... 'English literature may offer a few, very few better narratives than Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, but none more delightful and humane.'

We are introduced to Lady Eileen and I love her! Sir Gawain and Terence are back for another quest, this time to find the Green Knight.

This was an amazing little book! It is geared toward middle grade readers, but honestly it makes a great palette cleanser for older readers. I can't wait to read more of the series and discuss it with a dear friend of mine who happens to be the author's nephew!

Finished this today and man, I'm just always in awe of Tolkien's skill as a translator. Listening to the audiobook brought this home even more, because it allows you to truly experience the musicality of the words! Also we can't forget that Pearl and Sir Orfeo are included in this edition. I think Sir Orfeo is one of my favs... I'm glad the ending is different than the Greek version. 😉

emmekamalei @SpeculativeFemale it is definitely a great one. Next I need to read his translation of Beowulf! 7y
Molly_7 @emmekamalei nice! I've been eying The Once and Future King on audible, but I'm not sure I'm down for 33 hours. :/ 7y
emmekamalei @Molly_7 I don't blame you there; I have been trying to finish that one for years, literally! The Sword in the Stone was great, but once it turned into the politics of Arthur and his court it was much harder to stay interested! I think I have like 8 hours left 😅 7y
CaitlinElizabeth @emmekamalei are there any books that are dedicated to the poems/prose/songs in LOTR? I would love to have them all in one volume (edited) 7y
emmekamalei @CaitlinElizabeth I'm not aware of something like that, but The Adventures of Tom Bombadil has some of them! 7y
