Beautiful story, so well written. I had never read anything about life at sea in the 1860s. Beth Browning is a wonderful Canadian author who managed to bring this time period to life. I will be reading her book “ The Sister‘s Tale” in the near future.

A fun and quick read! An adventure in which you can think as much or as little as you'd like. I haven't read too many graphic novels so this was a new experience that I rather enjoyed. It feels much different than an illustrated book.

This is a sturdy novel about a Cold War destroyer captain who plays too close to the edge in games with a Soviet sub. A jaded rapscallion of a press liaison is on hand as the audience surrogate, watching with suspicion as the captain‘s fanatical (and also surprisingly complex) nature is slowly revealed and the crew is amped up to a state of constant tension. Definite Caine Mutiny vibes with a touch of nuclear war…I mean, warning.

This is the first book I taught as a student teacher!

Charlotte Doyle is traveling home from school in England to Rhode Island in 1832. Charlotte finds herself the lone passenger with a cruel captain & a mutinous crew. What begins as an exciting ocean crossing turns into a nightmare, where Charlotte is put on trial for murder.

dabbe 💙 this one! 3mo
Karisimo I read this recently and it was darker than I expected, but good! Thanks for sharing!! 3mo

This is without a doubt my favorite Penguin Classics cover of all time. The interior covers pirates from Francis Drake through Jean Laffite. New to me are the reports of 19th-century ships attacked by pirates. Everything is taken from source documents. Whether you are the least bit curious about pirates or you're a longtime fan, this one is one of the best out there.

I picked this up because I'm a sucker for female pirates and after reading The First Lady of Iceland's Eliza Reid's book The Secrets of The Sprakkar last year this biography seemed like a no brainer. It was good she just wasn't a pirate. Instead I found the history of a woman way ahead of her time, an unapologetic, trouser wearing fishing woman turned captain who fought to keep everything she earned yet lost throughout her entire life...

MaggieCarr ... Having some knowledge of Icelandic names (from the for mentioned book) helped me a lot while reading this one, but the author does a great job refreshing a reader's memory or clarifying if more than one character shared a name.

A new look at the Golden Age of Piracy pirates and the notoriety in our modern culture. Savvy?
