I had never heard of Captain Thuridur, which is surprising considering how much I love both sea stories and Icelandic history. Her reputation suffered as women's rights waned in the 1800s in Iceland, but this book brings her back to her rightful status as a bad-ass woman of Iceland's past.

I got the tagged book for Christmas (my sister is awesome) and used some of my Christmas gift card on the other three (my dad is also awesome). I‘ve been waiting forever to get this Riordan but now I have to wait on the new Percy books to come out in paperback 😢 and I decided to bite the bullet on Bride. I‘ve liked everything else I‘ve read by AH (which is everything but Check & Mate, which I‘m currently reading) so we‘ll see. #bookhaul

I picked this up because I'm a sucker for female pirates and after reading The First Lady of Iceland's Eliza Reid's book The Secrets of The Sprakkar last year this biography seemed like a no brainer. It was good she just wasn't a pirate. Instead I found the history of a woman way ahead of her time, an unapologetic, trouser wearing fishing woman turned captain who fought to keep everything she earned yet lost throughout her entire life...

MaggieCarr ... Having some knowledge of Icelandic names (from the for mentioned book) helped me a lot while reading this one, but the author does a great job refreshing a reader's memory or clarifying if more than one character shared a name.

Such a well written nonfiction story that refrains from embellishment, instead relying on source material that could have easily not existed and we would never have known of this remarkable Icelandic woman. Dedicated to historical accuracy while casting off the shackles of bigoted and sexist interpretations of the not-distant past, I am so impressed with Willson's meticulous research and storytelling. A great deal of thanks is owed for this work.

For those willing to brave the tongue bending Icelandic names, this is worthy tale. Set in the 1800‘s, this story covers the remarkable life of Captain Thuridur, a rule breaking woman who challenged basic gender roles by completing a successful career as a fishing boat captain in the harsh waters off Iceland‘s coast. Largely forgotten to history, Captain Thuridur is back to life and paid the honor she didn‘t seem to achieve when she was alive.
