Read for #readtheworld2025

Memoir about a man‘s life in Kenya. I found it interesting and very specific to Wainaina‘s life. A mix of coming of age and details of how he became a writer.

#kenya

GatheringBooks I don‘t think i‘ve ever read a book from Kenya yet. Stacked! 1d

There are so many historical fiction books out there focusing on Germany during WWII, that I found it a refreshing (for lack of a better word) change to have a novel shine light on Asia (specifically Malaya) during this time &highlight the lives effected &tragedies that occurred there.

There are serious topics &it‘s at times a difficult read, but I appreciated how the author approached each topic &how informative this historical fiction book was.

GatheringBooks Awesome! I wonder if the novel mentioned Singapore - as they used to be one country. :) 2d
Kristy_K @GatheringBooks It didn‘t but when I was looking up some of the history from the book, I saw that and I never knew they used to be one country. So much they don‘t teach us in history. 2d

“Every 2 hours and 25 minutes, a woman in #Mexico is strangled, raped, dismembered, burned alive, mutilated, beaten to pulp, and left with bruises and broken bones.”

Combine these gruesome facts on femicide with living the high life of drugs, money, cosmetic surgery and Instagram followers and you probably have the span of Mexican society and of this #InternationalBooker collection of short stories. A good one.

GatheringBooks Ooh! A perfect gruesome book to read for #ReadTheWorld2025 indeed. 2w

I enjoyed getting a glimpse into Tibble‘s world and being exposed to indigenous life in New Zealand through her poetry.

I Did Something Bad: A Novel | Pyae Moe Thet War

Pickpick

While there are parts of this that require you to suspend disbelief, I Did Something Bad is so much more than just a romance with a hint of suspense. I would argue this is more about friendships, focusing on trust and belief, finding oneself, and even a bit of social justice issues.

I enjoyed getting to know the culture of Myanmar as I knew little outside of the civil unrest and armed conflict. ⬇️

Kristy_K Khin is a journalist on the cusp of a career move if she can get the scoop on movie star Tyler. What begins as a professional agreement escalates to friendship after Khin accidentally kills a man in self-defense. They decide not to come forward (for reasons explained) & while this becomes the underlying plot, the highlights are really about how their friendship grows from their connection on social issues & their relationship w/ their friends. 1mo
GatheringBooks Nice! I don‘t think I have anything on my bookshelf from myanmar at all! Stacked! 1mo

A middle aged son drives his old and ill mother across Switzerland. They argue and confront the past. They‘re rich. Her father never stopped being an Nazi. The story is a mix of stream of consciousness, name dropping and little plot.
Not my favorite of the #InternationalBooker25 longlist but it has some good parts.

Graywacke @BarbaraBB I‘m still working through what the library provides. I‘m reading Under the Eye of the Bird. I‘ll pick up The Book of Disappearance from the library today and read that next. Then Solenoid - which i own. 1mo

Tom and Anna are Italian graphic designers, who moved to Berlin because it‘s the place to be. They live a life that confronts me with living in Amsterdam: all the trends, the hip & happening, the urban nomads, the gentrification, the coffee everywhere, the underground raves, the emptiness of it all. A mirror for me of who I used to be not that long ago. A great start of the #InternationalBooker longlist!

#ReadTheWorld2025

Hi @GatheringBooks here‘s my first update on your challenge. In January and February I read 6 books set in countries and/or written by authors from all over the world. These countries are #Mexico, #Japan, #SouthKorea, #Netherlands, #FrenchPolynesia and #Chile. I hope to read at least six more in March and April!

GatheringBooks That is awesome! Great progress! 💕💕💕 2mo
GatheringBooks Which one is your favorite, by the way? 2mo
GatheringBooks @BarbaraBB i have yet to find that one. I did enjoy his 2mo

The speculative tale of Yewon, a young woman adrift, and of the relationship between the Koreas. At first it is rather realistic, with Yewon wondering about her life while driving a North Korean woman to her long lost brother in prison and while worrying about her mom, who keeps and daily washes the bones of family members. Yewon doesn‘t eat and dreams of an invisible hotel. And are the Koreas heading for peace or war?Very weird. #ToB25Longlist
