The Problems of Philosophy | Bertrand Russell
post image

I've been studying epistemology in my class this semester and I've been looking for books to help me understand it better. I added this book to my ThriftBooks cart two days ago, and then I surreptitiously found it at the library book sale yesterday! It's annotated and I'm enjoying not only reading Russell's writings, but also the scribblings of the previous owner who was also trying to make sense of it all.

Anyone else gets annoyed by these? ://

Almost always can‘t get my focus back

kspenmoll Yes! 2w
AlaSkaat @kspenmoll it reminded me of the ‘can you find the the mistake? 123‘ so I kept going back and forth thinking I‘m reading it wrong ! There‘s so many punctuation mistakes in books though. Especially older ones. 2w

“The free man is immoral, because it is his will to depend upon himself and not upon tradition: in all the primitive states of humanity 'evil' is equivalent to 'individual,' 'free,' 'arbitrary,' 'unaccustomed,' 'unforeseen,' 'incalculable.'“ ~Friedrich Nietzsche, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒘𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑫𝒂𝒚

Sent to me by a friend I am not sure the source

Box has a box set of Kant 🤣😂🤣

CatLass007 I have never read Kant. Are you someone who has read him, liked it or at least learned from? If so, do you have any thoughts on an entry-level book for the uninitiated? I‘m always on the lookout for new authors to teach me new things. 1mo
CatLass007 Oh, and it‘s great that your books made it to you anyway. It‘s too bad that the gift card was lost and you don‘t know who sent it. I hope it was a generous Litten who will speak up. 1mo
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Clearly an uncultured thief 😉 1mo

ChaoticMissAdventures @CatLass007 I dabbled in philosophy in college and lets just say that we had a super rude rhyme for Kant he is tough, and a bit boring (he probably isn't as bad as I remember, or we pretended, I do believe in his founding belief). I think if you are interested in the philosophy of ethics and reasoning I would start with this one - 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage clearly. No dragons, no shirtless men on the cover. Can't be good - ohhh maybe the “thief“ already has these books? 😂 1mo
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Lol! Then they should have left a note with their review… 🤣 1mo
CatLass007 Thanks! 1mo

Meditations | Marcus Aurelius

Pickpick

Meditations is a classical collection of writings by Marcus Aerelius, former emperor of the Roman Empire. Marcus‘ Meditations are commonly entwined to Stoicism, an ancient philosophy, and would be placed in the self-help section of any library. As I read further into the book, I increasingly find Marcus‘ reflections relevant to modern day life, although having lived nearly 2000 years ago.

bensyn.shukaliak Meditations teaches a new state of mind, and way of living, through self-control, discipline, and compassion, and is an amazing read for one looking to improve their life and strengthen their mind. 2mo
bensyn.shukaliak If you enjoy books that focus on self development and leadership, Meditations has many similar aspects to The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene as both books put focus on one‘s perspective on the world around them through constant discipline and daily mindset development. (edited) 2mo
bensyn.shukaliak An individual key theme in Meditations that is consistently referenced in many reflections throughout the book is self-control and self-discipline, of oneself despite the severity of external events. Summarized, the key theme in meditations is this: We cannot control the world around us, the only thing we can control is the way we respond. 2mo
bensyn.shukaliak Keep a calm and logical mind no matter what happens around you. This philosophy is consistently tested throughout Marcus‘ life, and perfectly demonstrated through his actions. From plague and loss, to famine and criticism, although often under extreme pressure, Marcus led the Roman Empire through courage, counsel and wisdom. 2mo

He was very wise. He also comes across as a self-righteous prig.

This book holds a special place in my heart. It got me through the difficult time of when my father was dying. I‘m not sure how I would have been able to cope without it.

Free Will | Sam Harris

Late for the readalong but figured I‘d finish it, and wish I‘d just chucked it. Repetitive but never particularly clear or convincing, Harris just seems to spitballing about something he kinda believes but can‘t convey. Not a great one, and if he were anybody else I don‘t think this would have gotten published at all.

kspenmoll I would have bailed if not that we discussed it. Most times not sure how to respond! (edited) 2mo
GingerAntics 100% agree… I‘m sorry we picked it, honestly. 2mo
