I hope everyone who wanted to participate was able to enjoy a nice cozy mystery as we head into winter for the #OhCanada read. This is a light discussion on thoughts about the series and/or author.

A reminder that many read different books in the series so no spoilers please.

Jess861 I enjoyed my first adventure in Three Pines! Not sure I'll read all in the series but I can see myself picking one up every so often if I find myself in the mood for a cozy mystery. 1d

LapReader I‘m almost done with mine. So far not that impressed. 24h
lauraisntwilder We have a long drive "home" to see family for holidays. My husband and I usually listen to audiobooks on the road, typically hardboiled stuff like Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammet, that we both like. At Thanksgiving this year, we listened to Still Life and we did A Fatal Grace at Christmas. I didn't realize these were considered "cozy," but it makes sense. We enjoyed them. (Although we did listen to a Chester Himes on our way back!) 24h
kspenmoll I am behind, so will go into January. Listening to 24h
merelybookish Can you add me to the #ohCanada book tag please! 23h
Ruthiella I read the second book. I‘d read the first a few years ago. I don‘t hate them but I know they aren‘t for me. Somehow I am just not smitten with Three Pines and its residents. But I do appreciate how Canadian they are! Everyone wore a toque! 🇨🇦 22h
Jess861 @LapReader That's fair. I enjoyed Still Life but didn't love it. I don't really read to many mysteries though. 22h
Jess861 @LapReader which one are you reading if you don't mind me asking? 22h
Jess861 @lauraisntwilder I'm not really sure what constitutes 'cozy' lol. I'm not much of a mystery reader myself. 22h
Jess861 @kspenmoll I also posted a day early. Hope you enjoy the book! 22h
Jess861 @merelybookish absolutely, glad to have you join! 22h
Jess861 @Ruthiella I agree, I didn't fall in love with the characters. It is very Canadian!! 22h
PurpleyPumpkin As I read this book earlier this year, I was hoping to get to the second in the series in December. Alas, I did not. But I did want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed SL and found it to be a real page turner. The big reveal wasn‘t as gripping as I thought it would be, but I still loved the book. I‘m planning to continue with the series. 👍🏽 22h
Jess861 @PurpleyPumpkin I didn't guess who did it throughout the read so that was a nice surprise for me when I was reading. 19h
LapReader I‘m reading the grey wolf. Listening to his constant thinking that doesn‘t seem to get him anywhere is starting to drive me nuts. 17h
Jess861 @LapReader While I enjoyed the first book, after reading it, I've wondered how the series has made it to so many books. I enjoyed the first but I can't imagine almost 20 books centered around Three Pines and the Inspector. 7h

#ChristmasCrimeChallenge “Cozy”
#OhCanada

I believe I understand the appeal but the mix of procedural and cozy in this series just doesn‘t work for me.

The loathsome CC de Poitiers is Three Pines newest resident and its most recent murder victim. Nobody liked her but who killed her during the annual curling event? Chief Inspector Gamache will get to the bottom of it with help from the village‘s residents.

RaeLovesToRead Interesting combo 🤔 7d
Ruthiella @RaeLovesToRead It‘s a super popular series. A lot of Littens love it. 7d
BiblioLitten I had a tad bit of an issue with how the author talked about the killer. 5d
Ruthiella I can understand that. Penny certainly underscored repeatedly how unattractive she was due to her weight. 5d

Pickpick

This is a low pick for me. While there are great characters and an intricate plot as with Penny's other books, I prefer her cozy mysteries, and this one is more of a political thriller, though I was happy to see some activity in Three Pines. Warning for other readers: this is not a standalone story but a sequel to The Grey Wolf.

#OhCanada @Jess861
#ChristmasCrimeChallenge (red cover) @Ruthiella @RaeLovesToRead

Ruthiella I‘m reading her second book for the same two hashtags! Only for #ChristmasCrimeChallenge I‘m using the “cozy” prompt. 🎅🏻💀🎄🔪 1w
Jess861 Interesting that this one is more political! And good to know that it's not a standalone. 1w
quietjenn @Ruthiella @kwmg40 😆 I am reading a mid-series book for the #s as well (set in winter prompt). 1w
kwmg40 @Jess861 I'd recently read State of Terror, which Penny co-wrote with Hilary Clinton, and that one was definitely a political thriller. Parts of The Black Wolf feels like it, and it even features a character from State of Terror. 23h

#weekendreads

It‘s the home stretch! These are the four books I “have” to read by the end of the year.

📕A Fatal Grace for #OhCanada and #ChristmasCrimeChallenge

📗The Rathbones for #10beforetheend + it‘s on my #Roll100 list

📘I am not Sidney Poitier for #10beforetheend

📙Six Wakes for the #ChristmasCrimeChallenge

Suet624 Good luck! 1w

Thanks to #OhCanada for the impetus to get this off the shelf.

It‘s always good to be back in Three Pines, enjoying the company of the residents, but the mystery in this book felt overly complicated and stretched my credulity. For most of the series Gamache‘s standing as the ideal good man was part of the charm, but in the last few I‘ve felt that Louise Penny has rather overplayed her hand & I‘m finding it a bit irritating. A low pick.

Ruthiella I think sometimes authors should just stop these long running series and write something else. I‘ve only read one book from Penny, but Elizabeth George comes to mind as someone who should have stopped writing the Lynley books a while ago. 2w
CarolynM @Ruthiella I read the first 7 Lynley books when they first came out - loved the first 5 (great mysteries & a great character in Barbara Havers, but also because of the ridiculously convoluted relationships & the laughable take on the class system), hated no. 6, no. 7 was OK but by then I was sick of them. Tried again after Helen died (I loathed her, I was inappropriately cheerful about that😆) & it was OK but, yeah, enough is enough.) 2w
TrishB I‘m a great lover of series and read many! It‘s very hard to get to 15 and still be delivering anything fresh. I‘m still reading this one but the last couple have been a bit meh. I understand why authors have more than one on the go! 2w

Jess861 As I was reading the first one, I was wondering how this series has so many books in it. Even just reading the first, I can see how it might be dragging at some point. Interesting to read your take! Thanks! 2w

I don't really read many mysteries let alone cozy mysteries so I don't have much to compare this book too...but I did enjoy it and will likely read more in the series at some point. I did find it hard to follow all the characters at first but once I was a couple of chapters in I figured it out. The characters and the town fit what some small Quebec towns are well. A good cozy mystery to read in December - and I never figured out who did it.

Nebklvr I love this series. 2w

#ohcanada challenge to read something by Louise Penny ✅ this is 9th in the series and so dark and twisted 🤯 I wasn‘t sure I‘d survive reading it but LP has been playing a long game with us ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ and I am in it for the long haul ( Rosa is no where near as scary as this cobra chicken)

Mshookquilts 😂😂 Love the meme. Having lived in Colorado with lots of Canada geese, I know the truth of this. 2w
Bookwormjillk This one is my very favorite, but it is intense. 2w
mcctrish @Mshookquilts like Rosa must be a Canada goose but on the other hand, no way 😂😂 2w
