WHEREAS: Poems | Layli Long Soldier
post image

This is where I am at this month. Not much reading is happening, but I couldn't tell you what is taking up the time instead. I finished The Odyssey. I got The Story of Art Without Men back from the library. I've been slowly making my way through The House in Paris and (not pictured) Apartment in Athens. Whereas is waaaaay out of my comfort zone and I'm not getting much out of it, but I'll keep reading in hopes that a poem will click.

BarbaraBB They all sound pretty tough. Maybe that‘s why you read not as much as you normally would? 2w

We have no room on our bookshelves, but also no self-control. 😂 We spent this rainy day in two secondhand book stores and came away with these treasures. #bookhaul

Love Medicine: A Novel | Louise Erdrich
post image

I've read 23 or so from this week's #threelistthursday

3 that left an impression:
🩵 Love Medicine
🩵 King Lear
🩵 In the Time of Butterflies

3 on the TBR:
🩵 The Inheritance of Loss
🩵 Kindred
🩵 Invisible Man

1 Confession:
I loathe Hemingway. 🫣😂

#tlt @dabbe

dabbe A few of these are on my TBR, too! Now I have to ask, any particular reason why you loathe Hemingway? I've only read a few of his short stories and have never wanted to tackle his novels. 😂 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🩵🩶 2mo
TheBookHippie @dabbe I shall once again declare you all are reading Hemingway incorrectly 😂😂😂😂 I love him. @lil1inblue fyi just giving @dabbe crap 😂😂😂😂 2mo

lil1inblue @dabbe I've read 3 or 4 novels by him. Each one was an utter slog to get through. I just couldn't connect. I find his writing to be self-indulgent. I also think he was an a$$ and a misogynist, and I do think that comes through in his writing. 2mo
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie 😂 😂 😂 Absolutely no worries. Different strokes for different folks, right! 😉 2mo
TheBookHippie @lil1inblue Ha. Should be said I fell in love with his short stories 30 plus years ago, along with being deeply troubled, he was helpful to women writers. Hemingway's early works, like Cat in the Rain, showed a feminist perspective that focused on women's social and gender role. So yes he could be self involved and misogynist, as well but I don‘t read it that way most of the time. Some of his prose about heartbreak is just so good. 😅🙃🤪🤷🏻‍♀️😂 2mo
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie That's fair. I don't think I've read any of his short stories (if I did, I don't remember), so perhaps my opinion is a bit uninformed. I will say I think there is value in the conversations about his writing - both the good and the bad. I don't regret reading his books - even if I didn't care for them, they made me think. I just don't think I could force myself to read any more. 😂 2mo
TheBookHippie @lil1inblue I have that with many authors 😂😂😂 2mo

A few years ago, I went to see Tommy Orange speak about his follow up to There, There. When asked about books he‘d recently read and loved, this was one of his recs.

And now I know why.

A gem I picked up at my library‘s used book sale. I find Erdrich‘s writing beautiful and heartbreaking. I feel a real connection to Native American culture and Erdrich is one of my favorite authors.

AshleyHoss820 I loved this one too! Broke me into pieces. 4mo
Suet624 Oh boy. This was the first Erdrich I read years and years ago. A stunner. 4mo

Compelling, heartbreaking, and very impactful. I did not see that end coming! Betrayal, double crossing, and deep rooted mistrust. Such a fantastic book. Book #97 in 2024

Stunning and transformative. These pieces brought the oldest myths and traditions into the world we live in now, and merged the two like a double exposed photograph. It showed beauty in places we typically don‘t see it, and exposed an authenticity to certain rituals in ways I‘d never fully understood before.

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude

Once again a poem in my morning poetry book was inspired by a specific song, and since I don‘t know much about jazz listening to this with Joy Harjo‘s words in mind was revelatory.

(I couldn‘t find a link to the poem, but it‘s The Other Side of Yellow to Blue in the Tagged book).

TieDyeDude That's so cool! Great discovery. Thanks for sharing. 6mo
