I loved this book. It‘s like a long, slow breath of fresh air and very much needed as someone who is in full time vocational ministry for the long haul.

I didn‘t grow up with the Bible, but somehow this Bible Stories book made it into my childhood bookcase, and somehow I still have it. I remember loving these illustrations as a child, and the ink had a strong smell that I thought was the smell of the blood in the Nile in one of the illustrations. #Exodus #BibleBuddyRead

Here, Ingersoll addresses the Pentateuch (first five books of the Bible). He eloquently points out the absurdity of the claims and stories contained in these books, which he argues were written by primitive men and not by some all-powerful, all-knowing supernatural being. It was an absolute joy to read, and hard to believe it was written over 140 years ago, in 1879, when religion had an absolute stranglehold over the minds of the masses.

bookishbitch That sounds amazing! I love stuff like that. Have you ever read The year of living biblically by A.J.Jacobs? That is another good look at the bible and religion. 4y
BestDogDad @bookishbitch I haven‘t read that one but I just looked it up and it sounds funny. Added to my TBR. Thanks for the recommendation! 4y

A fascinating biography of Moses. The author quotes traditional interpretions but also contemporary literature and psychoanalysis. I enjoyed reading the chapter: Lost Identities Deronda and Austerlitz about lost Jewish identities in Eliot's Deronda, Sebald's Austerlitz and Exodus, i.e. comparing the main character's experience with Moses'. Interesting!

Izai.Amorim Interesting! Some Reform Judaism theologians and bible scholars doubt that the people of Israel were enslaved in Egypt - maybe a few - and that the whole Moses and Exodus story didn‘t happen, at least not as written. No matter on what side of the argument one stands, Genesis and Exodus = great storytelling! 5y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim Yes! Heard about that also that the number of people, were not as high as stated in the Torah. Started reading a book by James Kugel 'The Great Shift encountering God in biblical times. He mentions something similar in the intro. Fully agree! Great storytelling and the women are particularly interesting. Miriam and Zippora in Exodus :). Also love Deuteronomy - Moses autobiography / memoir... 5y
Izai.Amorim A very interesting author to read is Richard Elliot Friedman, a professor for comparative literature. "Who Wrote The Bible" gives you a quick and dirty introduction. "The Bible With Sources Revealed" has the text in different colors according to author. Enlightening. 5y

Anna40 @Izai.Amorim Oh! Thanks! Will definitely look into book and author. Any books on Exodus / Genesis you have read and would recommend? 5y
Izai.Amorim I'd recommend reading the original with commentary. Depending on the commentary, you have a different meaning for the same text. The Reform "Torah Modern Commentary" by Gunthet Plaut is excellent but expensive. "A Torah Commentary for our Times" by Harvey Fields offers commentary from different rabbis, also orthodox. 5y
Izai.Amorim Then there's the Jewish Study Bible, comprehensive but affordable, could be a good point to start. 5y
Anna40 Have the Plaut and Women's Commentary :) am looking for books on Genesis and Exodus. But Kugel might give some further reading recommendations. 5y
