I really enjoyed this, although yeah, the tropes are there. But it was written in 1982 and was her first book, so I'll give her a break on that.
I'll be reading the rest of the series as well.

bailedSHADOW MAGIC starts off highly readable and engaging, but it lost me about a third of the way through as it leaned into tropes I‘m tired of. Fifteen years ago, I probably would‘ve enjoyed it well enough. These days, I‘ve read so much pseudo-medieval fantasy, and so many travel-heavy quests involving Stupendous and Magical Thingies and/or People, that I‘m saturated. Books like this are a hard sell for me. I couldn‘t care enough to make it past 50%.
New book + bubble tea doughnut. So far, SHADOW MAGIC practically reads itself, which makes it exactly what I need this close to the end of the year. I hope it keeps up.
pickWe finished this morning! This book had me smiling through most of it and laughing out loud! The characters are some of the best! I‘m sad that we have left the world she created! It‘s about a prince, Princess, a distracted lady of the tower and a wizard king. That are face with mathych that is coming to consume all!
Listening to my husband reading on his break I can get creative. Patricia C. Wrede has amazing characters!

pickAs a huge fan of She-Hulk, it‘s been disappointing not to have access to many She-Hulk comics at my library. With Marvel Unlimited I can read it all! Here‘s She-Hulk‘s origin story from 1980. It‘s a little corny but honestly I think it‘s great. A must-read for She-Hulk fans. 5⭐️

I think Lyra may be the only level headed character in this book at times. She‘s clearly more ethical and humane than any of the adults. I hope she takes them all down by the end of the series.
