Packhorse librarians in 1930s Kentucky: what's not to love? (I was half expecting the library service to launch a volunteer recruitment drive on the back of this. 😆).
I enjoyed it, especially the growing friendships between the women. I did think a major plot point was superfluous, though, and I greatly prefer my characters to have nuance, rather than be straight-up goodies/baddies (all the more so these days).

I originally read the sequel first because the library didn‘t have this one. Interesting story of the Kentucky Packhorse Librarians during a time of starvation, miscegenation laws, misogyny and all manner of inequality and inequity at every turn. The Blue Fugates were real people suffering from a blood disorder called ‘methemoglobinemia‘. While the disorder wasn‘t healthy, the greater danger was in ignorance and racism as a reaction to it.

My day didn‘t go entirely as planned. Instead of chilling at home while the washer and dryer did their thing, I sweated at the laundromat and schlepped my clothes in and out of the car.

I figured I deserved to take myself out to dinner. There‘s been an eclectic mix of music playing at the restaurant, including Sam Hunt saying he wants to introduce me to his Kindle.

Alas, not his Kindle but his kinfolk.

My first bell hooks but definitely not my last! This one was so fantastic! A slice of life in rural Appalachia.

I read this in the past month and I have to say I loved it!

bell hooks is a new-to-me author and one I want to pick up more of. This haunting collection made me homesick for a place I've never been.

I thought this was a good historical fiction read. Its main character suffers from methemoglobinemia which is a hemoglobin disorder that makes your blood darker & less oxygenated therefore causing the skin to have a blue hue. I remember learning about this disorder in my hematology class so this aspect of the novel piqued my interest. Also learned about the Pack Horse Librarians who delivered books to people in remote areas of Appalachia.

Ugh, this was rough. I was so bored. Nothing happened. I felt connected to no one (minus Junia the mule 😆) and struggled to finish this. (25)

#StorySettings #Farm Wendell Berry is such a gifted writer. Well drawn characters and an incredible sense of place. Though his setting is in Kentucky, there are things in these two books common to farmers everywhere.

Encyclopedic. Very detailed in almost every aspect of life on the Kentucky frontier in the early 1800‘s. Yet written in a way that‘s interesting and entertaining. A lot to be learned with a little adventure thrown in. It is a marathon to read at 848 pages. I‘ve put it down and returned to it many times.
