Let the Circle Be Unbroken | Mildred D. Taylor
post image

This was a reread, but almost like reading it for the first time as it has been many years. Like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, I first read this when I was a kid. As an adult I am amazed by how Mildred D. Taylor tackles the really ugly effects of racism in a middle-grade appropriate way without glossing over anything. That can‘t be easy to do. Much respect for this author. 🔸 #januaryreads2021

alysonimagines P.S. I actually didn‘t realize until recently that the author has written a whole series about the Logan family. Wow. I would love to read the newest addition to this series, published last year: All the Days Past, All the Days to Come. And also The Road to Memphis, which precedes it. 4y

This was a reread. I first read and enjoyed this (and its sequel, Let the Circle Be Unbroken) when I was a kid; I definitely appreciate it more now as an adult. 🔸 #januaryreads2021

Recommended by several members of my book club, #LitsyATXReadersSociety or #LARS for short. It was also my pick for our January theme, “Read previously for LARS by another member.” I loved the openly curious and innocent questions of the author‘s young mixed-race son about race, religion, and culture. 🔸 #januaryreads2021

Trying a new twist this year on sharing my favorite reads. I love writing book reviews but am finding less time these days, so I‘m retiring my Book Review Roundup (at least for now) and instead I will be posting Monthly Reads, sharing my favorite titles each month with minimal comment. Here goes! Starting with January because I want to catch up. (Note: [at]alysonimagines is my Instagram handle.) #monthlyreads2021 #januaryreads2021

alysonimagines I want to make more time for visual art this year—both hand-made drawings and computer aided graphic design. So I‘m not writing as much, but I am designing my own graphics for this new series, experimenting with using the monthly calendar as a visual grid and also trying out a limited color palette. 4y
