I will always push this biography of Huguette Clark. It is so well written and she is fascinating. Her father was a terrible man who left her $$$$ she spent her days locked in her own world of art and dolls and quiet philanthropy. If you can listen to the audiobook which has recordings of her voicemails to her cousin who is the author here.

marleed I‘m there pushing this book with you. My hometown is Butte, Montana - nuff said! 2y

#Bookspin #Doublespin May

Here is my updated list with this month‘s picks swapped in. So far, it looks like I will be filling up my free spaces first as my current reads are not on the list. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #bookspinbingo

LeahBergen I really enjoyed Empty Mansions. 👍 3y
EvieBee Ooh, you‘re both prompting me to finally pick up Empty Mansions. Been on the shelf forever! @LeahBergen 3y
Bookzombie @LeahBergen Yay, that‘s good to know. 🙂 @EvieBee It has been on my shelves a long time too. ☺️ 3y

I was fresh off watching The Gilded Age, so I was super curious to learn about this family we‘ve never heard of. I thought it was a fascinating true story about this woman who had more money than I can fathom, but only ever desired to remain anonymous, which is always the opposite of what we‘re used to with rich people!

This was my #BookSpin! It‘s a lovely deep dive into an American history spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, and one woman‘s journey into the extreme cocoon of loneliness that immense wealth brings. My husband bought it for me for Christmas a few years ago, so I checked a book off my shelves! Huguette‘s father, William A. Clark, was born in 1839. Huguette died in 2011. ⬇️

(Monday‘s Sunrise; 17 F. Today: 67 F upcoming!)

MittenGirlPeach The story is interesting and well-told, and Gordon is a wonderfully empathetic biographer. There‘s a lot of background, but it‘s all eminently readable. Four stars. 3y

My #Bookspin list and books! So. I completely forgot about making a list for March, even though @TheAromaofBooks did her wonderful reminder list and tagged me but still . . . it snuck up. When I saw my notification this morning I postponed the excitement of looking until I MADE MY LIST. This included the adventure of me tracking down a missing book, which I‘ll blather on about later, but for now, TA DA! 👇🏻

MittenGirlPeach My #Bookspin was a Christmas gift from my wonderful husband a few years ago and my #Doublespin was at the top of my TBR stack! Can‘t wait to dive in. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!!! Lots of BookSpin adventures! 😂 3y

Hopefully, I didn‘t monopolize my IRL bc last night. Last fall, I stayed quiet as a member nominated this book for 2022, and was thrilled when picked - even when it meant I would be reading it for the 3rd time! WA Clark is all about my hometown, it‘s history, it‘s folklore. Fascinating to watch a group of women discover his place (questionable as it is) in American history for the first time. And Hugette, I love to visit with Hugette!

This is a book I rarely seen discussed but I loved. All about a recluse woman who was living in a NY hospital but owned a bunch of property that was filled with treasure. It is historical and a biography and just fascinating. Huguette was also incredibly generous. If you listen to the audio there are recording of her calling her nephew which increases the experience.

LeslieO Stacked! Sounds like my kind of book. 3y
Eggs Sounds wonderful 📚👏🏻🏙 3y
marleed My hometown (Butte MT) plays a prominent role in this book. William Clark remains a well known historical figure (or villain) there - one of the 3 Copper Kings! 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures @marleed yes! Her father, a good portion of the beginning of the book is about her father (because not a lot was know about her). He sounded like a piece of work. 3y
