The language of stories. I am reading Witness along side our class reading of Night.

TheBookHippie I have all his books. They‘re just so so powerful. Especially now. 4d
BooksandCoffee4Me Have your students read Refugee, the three stories of refugees from different time periods and places - Germany, Cuba, Syria - whose storer connect at the end? My ninth-graders got into tracking the journeys and doing a variety of art pieces related to the characters. Discussions in small groups were fairly natural and not coerced, always a plus. 4d

4.5 ⭐ This is the story of Maurice, a young man who had to flee his home when Nazis took over. He had a dream all his life to become a lawyer. Because lawyers helped people. But life moving from place to place to stay away from the war and death took its toll on Maurices education. As a refugee in Jamaica, he wanted to continue his education, but the refugees were not even allowed out of camp without a day pass. So instead of going to school,

LibrarianRyan he went to his neighbors. Said teach me and I will learn. Eventually through his studies and through time he realized that the only way to get into college to go to law school was to graduate high school. So he pled his case to a local Jamaican school and then again into a university in Canada. Maurice did attain his law license and the rest of history. This book was lovingly written by Marissa‘s son. The illustrator told the story in graphic 3mo
LibrarianRyan format, and it works quite well. This book is a bit longer because it‘s a biography. This book was fantastic and I hope others read it and learn how important in education is when you are denied one. 3mo

I enjoy memoirs and this one was no exception. Her portrayal of being a Jew during the Holocaust is raw and honest in that many of her feelings are typical for being a teenager. Equally impressive with her resilience was how much detail Gerda remembered. Highly recommend!

CogsOfEncouragement I read this about twenty years ago. It left quite an impression. I also highly recommend it. 7mo

This was a very hard read, but l also think so important. This book shows the evil people are capable of, but also the importance of acts of kindness- no matter how small. It‘s chilling to think of how easily the German people accepted the Nazis antisemitism. A lesson to us all

Day: A Novel | Elie Wiesel, Anne Borchardt

“Man carries his fiercest enemy within himself. Hell isn‘t others. It‘s ourselves. Hell is the burning fever that makes you feel cold.”

The author once again grapples with life and love and death, just as he did in the first of his series: Night. This time he is flat in bed, after an accident in which he was run over by a NYC cab…
