Loved my #bookspin book for March!!!! It's a middle grade memoir of a girl growing up in Bosnia just before the war. She is just about the same age as me, so even though it was in a different country, it felt nostalgic. It was a perfect blend of personal, family, and national issues. I love how her culture was portrayed and was saddened by many turn of events. Now I need to read her YA account of the war years...

Poignant story of Japanese American soldier who fought with honor against Germans in Europe. He succeeded as a soldier despite a lot of prejudice at home. His family was at Topaz camp in Utah.

I am reading this one now about Japanese American soldiers in Europe during the big war, while their families were interned in camps back home!

I've been lucky recently with the Library Thing giveaway program, winning books I've requested AND actually receiving them!
This one is a psychological study of the impact of war & long term conflicts on identity, group dynamics, and the dehumanisation of the other.
Is it surprising that the outcome of seeking to genocidally bomb your opponent into oblivion is not peace but more war? Who could possibly have guessed?🫠

Bookwomble Oh, my dinner is yesterday's veggie meatball pasta in creamy tomato sauce, with no meatballs as I ate them all for tea, topped with mozzarella and served with added bread carbs 😋 2mo
Aims42 This book sounds fascinating!! And your dinner sounds delicious, I gotta have “added bread carbs” with my pasta too 🤗🥖🍞🥐 2mo

This was really interesting. A Marine Corps legend I first heard about in boot camp, and why I read it. I was curious as soon as I heard of it. He really breaks down the how and why of so many things this country & our military do & how they are flawed. He also gives his plan of how things can be done better. Being written after only the 1st World War and before nuclear weapons, some of the ideas are dated. Not to say some wouldn't still work tho.

Alaska Battle of the Books High School list for 2024-2025. I am on maternity leave this semester, but I will help a bit when I‘m back in January before the battles. I am working on Sunrise over Falluja. I‘ve read Old Man and the Sea and Fighter in the Velvet gloves before.

I am enjoying Robin‘s fresh voice. It‘s almost weird to hear the youth in the voice of an Iraq War soldier since this invasion happened when I was in 5th grade. I think Meyers‘ portrayal of the confusion and lack of knowing even in the soldiers rings true.

A reread of a classic kid‘s picture book published in 1961. If only the worlds leaders would read it .
Beautifully written and illustrated a gentle reminder of the beauty and peace in the world.
. “At height of Cold War , a young couple produced a new kind of book for children .
It confronts the folly of war and the threat to the environment.”

This is a short graphic chronicle of the first 100 days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Igort is an Italian cartoonist with a deep personal connection to both of these countries. I was amazed how much his drawings and the accompanying texts moved me. I cannot believe that this war has been going on for two and a half years with no end in sight. You mudt have a heart made of stone if this book doesn‘t touch you in some way.
