So today I graduated with my Master of Science in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy. Took a lot of effort and I probably wouldn‘t have survived if it wasn‘t for Litsy and all the reading I did to keep my mind sane. So being the nerd that I am, I wore the time turner to graduation and was gifted this Erlenmeyer flask from my department. Happy to see what the next step is!

Schnoebs @julesG thanks for reminding me what it actually was 😂 with everything going on I couldn‘t remember the name and I‘m just like, let‘s go with beaker lol 6y
julesG I'm contemplating getting two smaller ones for my kids. Incidentally, when my son read Artemis lately he chuckled at a scene where a scientist has several beakers with acids on his workbench right next to his coffee mug, always blindly grabbing his mug. The MC wonders whether he'll grasp an acid beaker one day. Anyway, told my son that I used to have my tea in an Erlenmeyer flask to avoid confusion - he was at awe, because I was ignorant of the 6y
julesG Ground rule in the lab: no food or drinks. I only did it in inorganic and physical chemistry sessions, never in organic 😸😸😸 6y
Schnoebs @julesG I‘m pretty sure that‘s the best chemistry story I‘ve ever heard 😂😍😂😍 6y

Struggles....

Had a bunch of stuff going on with school and work that I had to put reading on the back burner. Now I need to finish all of these before the end of the month for my required reading for class, before my library loans are due and to complete a few more classes for #owlsreadathon2019 Don‘t mind me as I drown in papers (happy pages, but so many pages).

I feel like the author knew what he was talking about but at the same time he wasn't sure about anything. There was no overarching story or even a time line to follow. He also repeated himself a lot throughout the book as he transitoned from one topic to the next which made me feel like he didn't fully understand how the current sections connected with the others throughout the book.

Avoiding my other schoolwork responsibilities by reading this book for class.... 🤷‍♀️ I‘m still technically doing homework right?

wanderinglynn That‘s a lot of tabs! 😂 what is the class you‘re reading it for? 6y
Schnoebs @wanderinglynn It‘s a current issues in science, technology and environmental policy course. I have a to write a summary on my thoughts of it at the end of each book. I have a tendency of highlighting a lot in the scientific articles I read but I just can‘t do that with books so I tab them lol 6y
wanderinglynn Ah, I understand. I have problems marking up books too. But the class sounds interesting. I‘m an environmental attorney, so dealing with environmental policy is a part of my job. And of course, there are huge overlaps with science & tech. 👍🏻 6y

Schnoebs @wanderinglynn that‘s so interesting!!! Is there a specific focus you have??? I‘m currently working on research on equity and affordability concerns for access to drinking water. 6y
wanderinglynn I work for the US government (currently the Dept of the Navy). So my focus has been mostly on water and one hot topic is PFAS, which among other things is found in firefighting foam. It‘s not currently a listed toxin with the EPA, but many states are looking into it. 6y
wanderinglynn The PFAS chemicals are very persistent in the environment and in the human body—meaning they don‘t break down and they can accumulate over time. There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human health effects. So the Navy is trying to get ahead of state regulation & develop policy on the use & potential cleanup of PFAS. 6y
Schnoebs @wanderinglynn so are you guys focused primarily on just looking into potential levels in regulations or are you guys also looking into alternative sources that can be used for the foam? 6y
wanderinglynn Both. 6y

I think this is a really good book for anyone who is interested in a basic foundation on the energy industry and the struggles we will be facing with striving to gain large percentages of their energy from renewables. There are some concerns from my friends in the energy sector about some of the information not completely describing things accurately but overall felt it was a good foundation to build off of.

I can‘t believe I loved a book on the history of genetics...

This book starts at the very beginning of the field with Darwin and Mendel and works its way all the way to present day with the creation of the human genome project and gene therapy.

I would highly recommend for anyone interested in genetics, eugenics and racism, gender identity and more!
