Concrete Rose | Angie Thomas
post image

Prequel to the amazing YA, The Hate U Give. Similar metaphors: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, growth from struggle & hardship. Also reminiscent lyrics from Ben E King's 1960 song: There is a rose in Spanish Harlem. . . It's growing in the street right up through the concrete. And most obvious, the poem by Tupac Shakur: Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

BooksandCoffee4Me Love that Tupac poem! Shared it with my students when we read Hawthorne‘s The Scarlet Letter — students loved it too. 14h

Listened 🎧 to this and watched the film 🎥 last night. Enjoyed both! I honestly can‘t remember if I truly read the book when I was in HS and I don‘t remember if I even saw the movie, but I can now FOR SURE check it off a list ☑️ #Feb2025 Book14

I have read and re-read this book and can say that it will always be a favorite. My own copy has definitely seen better days but the love I hold for this book is deep. I think everyone should read this book at least once in their lives and then stop to think about the message the author was trying to convey.

Think I‘m behind on the #12booksof2024 so this is my October pick. I finally read Dear Martin & this one—in time to meet Nic Stone at a book fair. Loved both, but this one hit me just a bit more because of kids I have worked with. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Loved both of these books - they both have a great impact. 1mo

It looks a bit worn because it has been used a lot in our school - I never did so far, but I definitely will. I really liked this coming off age story and it doesn‘t feel like being old at all. I really like the way of fast-paced writing and enjoyed the somewhat hardened character of Cherry very much. She‘s definitely seen it all. 💪💪💪

Tamra My son really liked reading it and watching the film. I don‘t recall if it was freshman or sophomore year. 3mo

Reading The Outsiders for the first time because we have a class set in school. It seems somewhat familiar even thogh I never read or watched it. Reminds me of all those underdog 80ies movies. 😊

TheBookgeekFrau Ohhhh, enjoy!! Such a good book ☺️ 3mo
Scochrane26 So good! And it was made into an ‘80s movie 3mo
DogMomIrene Highly recommend watching the movie after you‘re done with the book. Both are so good! 3mo
MariaW @Scochrane26 @DogMomIrene I will definitely watch the movie next. 😊 3mo

Dear Justyce | Nic Stone

While I was still processing Dear Martin, I wanted to listen to this one. The story of Quan, who‘s in juvie for murdering a cop, & his contacts with Justyce. TWs for domestic violence, gangs, gun violence. This book is one I can relate to because I used to work in a school with these types of boys (poor, poc, trauma in fams). I have thought about my 3 Black boys from that school who have died before they were 18 in the last few yrs. The school 👇

Scochrane26 Staff & teachers provided as much support & love as we could, but it wasn‘t enough after elementary school. Two of them had family members who tried to be supportive. When I heard about the most recent one, my 1st thought was that “the police won‘t try too hard to solve his murder”. I still hope that society can find solutions for kids like mine & Quan. #frightclub #hauntedshelf 3mo

Long Way Down | Jason Reynolds

Pickpick

*Long Way Down* by Jason Reynolds follows Will, a 15 year old teen who decides to avenge his brother Shawn‘s murder by following his neighborhood‘s “rules” of revenge. Shawn devasted of his brothers murder, he decides to follow rule number 3 which is revenge. Shawn that night found his brothers gun and slept with it, knowing that tomorrow he was going to kill the guy who he think murdered Shawn. When Will arrives to the guys apartment.

Aluet_ He goes on a elevator ride down. Their is 7 levels and every single one he encounters a ghost from his past. These include people like his uncle, childhood friend, and even his father. They show him the result of tragedy, loss, revenge, and harsh consequence of violence. Will is faced with the question of should he carry out the plan, or should he listen to these visitors. 3mo
Aluet_ if you like books that are fast paced and will keep you reading I recommend The Hate U Give. It also talks about the violence that African American teens go though and will keep you alert. The point of view in this book is First person. The author uses Wills voice directly allowing readers to hear his thoughts and emotions as he speaks in verse. We are given his thoughts and how he thinks while reading this book. 3mo
