Fortune-Tellers | Lloyd Alexander

It's that time of year again, time to put away my Halloween decorations. ☹️ But I'm comforted by finding this lovely poem while cleaning, illustrated by my favorite illustrator Trina Schart Hyman. 😊 It's from the October 1986 issue of the Cricket magazine.

This was a unique book. Saskia comes from a long line of bone charmers, but doesn't want to be one. There's a bone reading ceremony that all teenagers go through that determines their career and potential spouse. Saskia breaks the bone and her reality spilts into two and she lives out two fates at once. The chapters alternate between Bone Charmer Saskia and Tutor Saskia. It was a really solid book. #YA #fortunetellers

What an amazing TL story by Lloyd Alexander! I read this story multiple times since discovering it and can't wait to use in my classroom! This would be a great RT or DR that the students would love. A man becomes a fortune teller without even knowing and this story has been passed down through the African culture. This story elements template works great with this story https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=46538&lf_id=9

Olsonashley19 UDL principle 3.1 and ESOL strategy 29 and 27 would be great to use with this story. #lae3414sp19 6y

Well-researched with a compelling MC and engaging prose. This historical was fulfilling except for the romance which wasn't really fully satisfying. I needed more.
