Stalking the Wild Asparagus | John McPhee, Euell Gibbons
post image
Mehso-so

I found this, while full of information, to be dated both in ways of identifying other cultures and in cooking methods. It‘s from 1962 and boiling for hours is his preferred cooking method! I‘m glad I read it, but I think I need photographs and maybe a mentor before I get into foraging. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

willaful This is a more recent one, though still 20 years out of date I guess! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7648502-the-complete-guide-to-edible-wild-pl...

Lcsmcat @willaful Thanks. Do you forage? 1w
willaful @Lcsmcat I had both books because I was interested in the idea, but it never really happened. 1w

Lcsmcat @willaful Same! I‘ve got some other books and I have some knowledge from childhood (who needs to be told how to recognize blackberries or walnuts?) but haven‘t gone beyond that. 1w
CSeydel Boiling for hours?!?! 1w
TheAromaofBooks I quite like this one as it has a lot of color photographs and info. But I definitely recommend trying to find someone in your area who can mentor you a bit, especially on look-alike plants. And like my dad always says, just because it's “edible“ doesn't mean it's “enjoyable“ 😂 But I've wanted to do more foraging ever since I was a kid and read My Side of the Mountain!! 1w
Lcsmcat @TheAromaofBooks Your father is a wise man. 😀 And I will check out that book. 1w
TheAromaofBooks The older couple that has helped me a bit with doing some foraging definitely have acquired different tastes than me over the years. But even just the process of it is one of those things that makes you feel connected to generations past. I can remember Grandpa, who grew up very poor in a West Virginian mining town, talking about going out and finding the first “greens“ of the spring - the first fresh produce they had had for months! It's just so⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) interesting to me what we take for granted - like popping into the grocery store and grabbing a head of lettuce any time we want, even in January! 1w

Hummingbirds: A Life-Size Guide to Every Species | Michael Fogden, Marianne Taylor, Sheri L Williamson

#Falling #Wildlife my mom loved Hummingbirds. The great thing about birds in general even if you live in a dense city , you will interact with birds. This book looks good , spotted it while browsing the local Barnes & Noble. Bird books in general make me remember that mom loved to maintain hummingbird feeding stations, seed feeders for other types of birds .

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I love hummingbirds too ❤️ 🤗 1mo

We need a better hummingbird book- I have seen 3 varieties at our feeder, but only 1 is identified in the tagged book. Suggestions?
Enjoying Tost Sparkling Wine, thanks to @Amiable while happily reading.

TheBookHippie I haven‘t found a good one either 😵‍💫😭 2mo

dabbe @spenmoll @TheBookHippie @Aims42 ... I don't know if you've seen these, but we absolutely LOVE these hummingbird feeders. 1st: easy to clean. 2nd: the birds can actually REST while drinking. 3rd: No need to use the artificial dyed food: just a 1:4 sugar/water ratio. 4th: Our birds LOVE these feeders!

Amiable Which aisle in Big Y was the Töst? I went looking at the one in Old Lyme the other day but didn‘t find it. I probably walked right past it. 2mo

kspenmoll @Amiable I am going tomorrow so I will check. It was on a top shelf- not with soda, next isle. Will let you know. 2mo
kspenmoll @dabbe I have one of these but I need a second! I did not even realize about the perch thing. The one I have is in garden. But now I want to replace the kitchen window one that is so active & we all can see them. My garden one I have to be on the porch. I do make my own sugar water, so easy! Thank you!!!! (edited) 2mo

janeycanuck Not a book but have you used the Merlin app? It‘s from Cornell and it‘ll identify birds by photo or sound. 2mo

Mourning dove update:

This is a still from our makeshift nestcam. The one on the gate is one of the babies, who flew down to perch and was joined by a parent briefly before parent flew to the nest. Then the other baby flew down to the gate but kept landing on its sibling, so they both flew up to the parent in the nest for second breakfast.

Quite exciting times at our gate! I think this means they're more teens than babies, though.

Eggbeater Aww. Your beautiful bird family is growing up. 🥰 I love that picture. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly You have to wonder if the second baby had bad aim or was just trying to annoy its sibling 😂 3mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So many weeds are actually edible, like dock, careless weed, black nightshade, kudzu, and bastard cabbage.

This illustrated book goes over the harvest and preparation for each plant in great detail.

#HaikuADay #HaikuHive

Yesterday I was watching a red-crested cardinal scavenging outside the coffee shop & it reminded me of one that hung out in another coffee shop & would fly in daily & grab a sugar-in-the-raw pack, fly back outside & open it up & share with friends. (Excuse the bad photo!) He‘s the inspiration for today‘s haiku.

Bees of Britain (WildID) | Christopher O\'Toole, Buglife, Chris Shields

I am, as Mrs Bookwomble put it, identifying the fuck out of these bees! 🐝🔍🤓
This is a Garden Bumblebee. Other visitors to the flowering shrub in our back garden have been the Honeybee, of course, a Common Carder Bee and a Red-tailed Bumblebee. The tagged guide has 28 of the most common of the ~250 British bee species, and it's enriching my lazy day in the sun 🌞
Also had a few Common Blue butterflies for variety 🦋

LeahBergen Your wife‘s comment! 😆😆 6mo
Bookwomble @LeahBergen Yes! She then said I should allow them to identify however they wished and not impose oppressive human categories on them. She has a point! ✊ 6mo

I love finding watermarks! I hauled this book recently and, beyond the well-written descriptions and plates which will be an excellent birding resource, I was thrilled to find this watermark for Warren‘s Olde Style. A quick search uncovers that this was a line from S.D. Warren Company, Boston. The official description, taken from an advertising digest I found online is, “a watermarked antique finish for type and line illustration.” Cool!
