1- Great title & great cover! 2- What an insightful, quirky, hilariously reflective collection of essays! I couldn't help giggling and then being moved by similar feelings! This is a great read (especially for young women from immigrant families--or anyone!) Koul is a fabulous writer and her voice is strong and entertaining!!!

Because we are all outlanders, at risk to be treated like one, and at risk to treat others like one.

I've started to make a point of reading more female authors! My goal is to read one from every continent and then every country (& every US state)!

I wanted to know...I needed to know what happened. I despised the unreliable narrator, I despised her habits. I adored the way she was written, the way the story unfolded. Although after a while, I guessed the outcome, there was something so wrenching about the way it played out, frustrating, making me question reality. It is terribly painful to be at the mercy of others' memories or the victim of their lies. AHHH.

A tale about a woman's identity and what that means for love set in rural 19th century China, this book is thought-provoking.
See's footnotes in the deluxe edition make for an educational experience, although that wouldn't be lost without them (it is merely enhanced learning about her research process).
Wonderful read, not gripping, but wonderful.
