The breadth and depth of this women‘s knowledge-of philosophy, literature, poetry, the Bible, social & political issues past and present, awes me. Her writing style of beautifully structured sentences, use of allusions, use of capital letters to emphasize certain words,(seems to be a pattern of words that men use to describe the desired woman:AMIABLE, NEAT, FLIRT, etc),command of vocabulary,
kspenmoll Her erudite presentation of both sides of the arguments she is responding to, her persuasive talent...I could go on and on. I learned so much from this book, about so many in each field that she alluded to, argued against, argued for. To me she is extraordinary, her dedication, & conviction that women are equals to men, that their education, influenced by social attitude and mores of the time, governments/men/laws that see women as legal property (edited) 5y
kspenmoll Of their father, then their husband, subjugates them.Given that she wrote this in 1792, influences from both the American and French Revolutions informed her thinking.(Our forefathers did not “Remember the ladies” as Abigail Adams petitioned her husband John.)Wollstonecraft‘s work & ideas remain relevant today.
