Friends of the Dusk | Phil Rickman

A new bishop at the Cathedral sees Merrily's work in 'Deliverance' (aka exorcism) at risk. Meanwhile she is asked to take on a case of strange activity at a 12th century house on the border between Wales & England. The new owners have been seeing & hearing weird shadows & noises, but when Merrily goes to see them, she has the feeling they are holding something crucial back. Good news - Lol is finally back. Bad news - so is Jane.

OutsmartYourShelf Elsewhere, police detective Frannie Bliss is called in when storm damage unearths a skeleton.

Another long & mostly slow plot that somehow manages to keep me interested enough to keep reading. I don't know how Phil Rickman does it, I really don't. Merrily was bearable enough in this one, & the plot strand about the possible haunting was quite interesting. Can't say the same about Bliss & his boring relationship with boss, Annie Howe.

OutsmartYourShelf Also, I find Jane very trying to read about. If I were boyfriend Eirion, I'd have dumped her months ago. Mind you, Merrily is almost as bad sometimes with Lol. Just take 10 mins to talk to the man!

Overall, interesting enough but some characters make you want to commit a literary murder yourself. 3.5🌟

Mehso-so

Zoe & Jonathan Mahonie move to city of Hereford & move into a modern-looking house, unaware that it had been the scene of a suicide several years before. Now Jonathan is away & Zoe calls in Diocesan Exorcist, Merrily Watkins, as Zoe says that she has been hearing a woman's laughter & seeing a woman who looks very much like the previous resident, Susan Lulham.

OutsmartYourShelf This is a novella which means that the slow set-up indicative of this series is curtailed & the story suffers for that. Also, is it just me or is Merrily a bit thick at times? Everyone advises her to stay away for the moment but the next scene, she is back at the house looking for Zoe. I also sometimes just want her to get the point rather than going all round the houses - I found her rather wearing in this story. 3⭐ 5mo

Book 37📚 4.5⭐️

Oooo a great spooky YA! It jumps right in and doesn‘t hold back! So excited to read the remaining 3 books!

Sofia is new to town and is instantly taken in by Riley and her friends. But when the bad girl in town kisses Riley‘s boy friend the group decides she needs to be “saved”. But this ain‘t yo mamas exorcism…😬

The Magus of Hay | Phil Rickman

When a man is found drowned below a waterfall, it looks like it could be either suicide or an accident until the police search the victim's home. What seemed like a simple case becomes a twisted tale involving paganism, magic, & Nazi history. In nearby Hay-on-Wye, Robin & Betty Thorogood decide to open a bookshop & inadvertently rent a haunted home.

OutsmartYourShelf Meanwhile with her holiday plans spoiled, Merrily is rattling around Ledwardine feeling a bit like a spare part - daughter Jane has gone on an archaeological dig with boyfriend Eirion, whilst Merrily's partner, Lol, is on a music tour.

I found this a better read than the previous book, probably due to the absence of the very-irritating-at-times Jane Watkins. Less of Jane's antics meant that there was more time to concentrate on Merrily

OutsmartYourShelf & her working relationship with DI Frannie Bliss, plus the return of the Thorogoods from an earlier book. The storyline itself was interesting, teased out very slowly in the way the reader comes to expect from these books. 4🌟

“And yet even from this-from evil-there will finally come good in some way; in some way that we may never understand or even see . . . Perhaps evil is the crucible of goodness.”

A #FavoriteQuote from one of @Lin3han #AuldLangSpine list for @monalyisha #Giveaway

I always love this event and appreciate the work that goes into matching us! Still reading Horrorstör (and Fourth Wing, but currently in library hold purgatory because I had to return it)

Lin3han It‘s been a busy month for me but I‘m especially looking forward to digging into the nutrition book you recommended! I‘m trying to eat healthier 🥰 12mo
monalyisha Thanks, @shortsarahrose! I‘m wondering if you intend for this to be your Giveaway entry (or if the quote was just for fun)? 12mo

Finished in time for #AuldLangSpine2024
A good slow build to a thrilling climax (the exorcism of the title). I liked how the novel delved into the psychology of the characters, the mystery aspects (trying to figure out what is happening with Regan/who killed Dennings), and how the banal and the horrific existed side by side. Certainly see some similarities with Rosemary‘s Baby (everyone was obsessed with Satanists in that era 😆) Enjoyably creepy!

Lin3han I‘m so glad you liked it!! The end had me screeching 12mo

“Early that quietly waiting evening, a young scholastic preparing for the priesthood wandered the grounds of Woodstock Seminary in Maryland. He was searching for a slender, gray-haired old Jesuit. He found him on a pathway, strolling through a grove. He handed him a telegram. His manner serene, the old priest thanked him and then turned to renew his contemplation, to continue his walk through a nature that he loved. . .”
