dabbe Not to be confused with sophomoric! I loved teasing my sophomores with that one--especially when they're behavior warranted it! 💚🩶♥️ 1w
peanutnine Oh I love the word soporific! It's one that I feel conveys its meaning through its sound 1w
Daisey Very interesting word choices today! 1w

Kind of a hard book to read but somewhat interesting too. I have been much into the history of English for a while now and hope to read more. Skimmed some of the end part.

lil1inblue Ok, now I'm curious. Growing up, I always heard the term back-handed compliment - does that derive from left-handed compliment? Is it meant to be the "PC" term for it? ? 3mo
Bookwomble That time when my daughter was about 6 years old and said to my mum after kissing her, "I love you grandma, but you are prickly!" Luckily mum thought it was hilarious and said she'd wax her top lip in future! ? 3mo
dabbe @lil1inblue You bring up an excellent point. I tried to research and the best I could find was the “left-handed compliment“ has been around a lot longer (due to that idea of “left“ meaning “evil“), but “backhanded“ also has negative origins in the fact that it originated as a “backslap“ instead of a direct one ... it still hurts! 💛💜🧡 3mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Your mum is FABUL💛OUS ... as is your daughter! 💛💜🧡 3mo
CSeydel @lil1inblue Same! I‘ve never heard “left handed compliment” before, although I know left-handedness has long been associated with things being wrong or bad (eg, “sinister”, “gauche”, etc.) I suppose it‘s like how my kids‘ generation grew up only hearing “criss cross applesauce” and never … well, you know. 3mo

Every wondered about the origin behind the word, Wednesday? And why isn‘t it pronounced Wed-nes-day, so weird. Anyway, here you go! I always thought the days of the week were all named for Roman gods - nope! #weirdwordwednesday #weirdwords
Also, an article: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/02/why-wednesday-the-days-of-the-week...

TheBookHippie Oh this is fascinating!!!! 3mo
CBee @TheBookHippie I thought I was being lazy by actually choosing the word “Wednesday” but, it ended up being a lot more interesting 🤓 3mo

CBee @TheBookHippie aw gee 💚💚💚 3mo
CatLass007 It really should be pronounced Wed-nes-day. 3mo
Bookwomble I've always pronounced it wed-ns-day 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Daisey Great choice for today‘s word! 3mo
kspenmoll I thought the same, from the Romans. This was such fun!!!! 3mo

dabbe I love learning new things! Thanks, m'dear! 🧡🩶💜 3mo
CBee @Bookwomble I say “Wensday” 🤷‍♀️😂 3mo
AnnCrystal 👏🏼🤩👍🏼💝💝💝 I loved when I first learned about this...also Woden connects with the God Odin, the chief Norse God. 3mo
CBee @AnnCrystal yes, I read that! I really need to read more Norse mythology. (edited) 3mo
AnnCrystal @CBee ☺️👌🏼 mythology is incredibly fun.

The name connection for Thursday is my favorite.

Funny thing, is that I've learned a boatload of legends from around the world and realized a few years ago that (in comparison) I know so little about the legends from my own ancestral world 😂🤔🥺 I'm currently on a journey to correct this about myself ☺️💫📚💝.
