Kind of a hard book to read but somewhat interesting too. I have been much into the history of English for a while now and hope to read more. Skimmed some of the end part.

Also genuine, true blue, the real deal, and so on. I feel like it could describe the fab new governors, the new NYC mayor, the folks who flipped the script all over the country. Well done 🩵 🌊 💙 #weirdwordwednesday #weirdwords

CBee @Amiable I read someone described as an “echt mensch” recently. Which is a huge compliment 😁 1mo

lil1inblue Ok, now I'm curious. Growing up, I always heard the term back-handed compliment - does that derive from left-handed compliment? Is it meant to be the "PC" term for it? ? 2mo
Bookwomble That time when my daughter was about 6 years old and said to my mum after kissing her, "I love you grandma, but you are prickly!" Luckily mum thought it was hilarious and said she'd wax her top lip in future! ? 2mo
dabbe @lil1inblue You bring up an excellent point. I tried to research and the best I could find was the “left-handed compliment“ has been around a lot longer (due to that idea of “left“ meaning “evil“), but “backhanded“ also has negative origins in the fact that it originated as a “backslap“ instead of a direct one ... it still hurts! 💛💜🧡 2mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Your mum is FABUL💛OUS ... as is your daughter! 💛💜🧡 2mo
CSeydel @lil1inblue Same! I‘ve never heard “left handed compliment” before, although I know left-handedness has long been associated with things being wrong or bad (eg, “sinister”, “gauche”, etc.) I suppose it‘s like how my kids‘ generation grew up only hearing “criss cross applesauce” and never … well, you know. 2mo

IT IS SEPTEMBER! WHY IS IT STILL IN THE 90s?!? 🫠

#WeirdWordWednesday #WeirdWords @CBee

wildwoodreads I fear it will stay in the nineties until late October here in Alabama 🥵 3mo
BookmarkTavern @wildwoodreads Oof! And you‘re dealing with the humidity too! 🫠 3mo
wildwoodreads @BookmarkTavern Yeah it‘s rough lol. And honestly it‘s been in the high seventies on Christmas Day more times than I can count. One year we played basketball and I wore a tank top. 😂 3mo

dabbe PERFECT word for Phoenix, too. It's been in the low 100s but with humidity above 60%. I love when the weather channel writes: Actual temp: 102. Feels like 108. 😳Yeah. Thanks, weather gods! 😂🔥😂 3mo
CBee @wildwoodreads I‘m in Alabama too - hi! And 🥵😭 3mo
wildwoodreads @CBee Hi, neighbor! What part are you from? I‘m in Northeast AL. 3mo
TheBookHippie It was coool here then bam today it was 80 3mo

I read about the Basque arborglyphs in #atreeaday and then, about the Pando aspen in Maggie, etc… (finished last night). Simply put: trees are amazing. #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

Deblovestoread Love this! Aspens are my favorite, their leaves make the best music in the wind. 5mo

Amiable This photo is gorgeous, too! 😍 5mo
SamAnne In the desert of SE Oregon, on Steens Mountain, one can find many carvings in the old aspen by Basque and other sheepherders from the early 1900s, maybe earlier. They are still there. Very cool, except for the disturbing carvings of female figures with antlers. Likely a little later by white dudes. 5mo
BookmarkTavern Oh wow! That‘s so cool! 5mo
lil1inblue @SamAnne How cool! That sounds absolutely breathtaking! 5mo
lil1inblue I love this! 😍 5mo
dabbe We just walked by some aspens on our walk with the pups. We're up north this week and are loving the weather and trees. L😍VE these new words. 🩵💙🩵 5mo
CBee @Deblovestoread we don‘t have them here - wrong kind of climate 😅 5mo
CBee @SamAnne hi!! So good to see you back on Litsy ♥️ Oof. So does it seem like someone came later and added the offensive carvings? That‘s awful. 5mo
CBee @dabbe sounds lovely! 5mo
