Kind of a hard book to read but somewhat interesting too. I have been much into the history of English for a while now and hope to read more. Skimmed some of the end part.

Anyone doing a white elephant gift exchange this year? 🤣

SamAnne Love this! Thanks for the share. 2w
dabbe @SamAnne YW! I adore learning allusions. 🤎🍁♥️ 2w
lil1inblue Well, I learned something new today! I never knew where this phrase came from, only what it meant! 💫 🌟 💫 2w

dabbe @lil1inblue That's why I love this allusion book I have. I'm even more interested in the background of the term than the allusion itself! Five gold ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for you! 2w
AnnCrystal Wow, never knew this! How fascinating! Weirdly cool 🆒💝. 2w
dabbe @AnnCrystal Me either! 🧡🍁🤎 2w

I didn‘t really realize it until today, but grimace is sort of a weird word to say. Try saying it a few times and see if you agree 😁 And who could forget lovable Grimace (but why did they give him that name?) of McDonald‘s fame! #weirdwordwednesday #weirdwords

Kerrbearlib Love it! 1mo
dabbe Fab word. And your face actually contorts into one the more times you say it! 💜 1mo

Amiable I remember looking it up once because I was wondering what Grimace was supposed to be —it said he was a taste bud?? Am I remembering that correctly? Because that‘s a super-weird cartoon character. 😄 1mo
lil1inblue Grimace is such an underutilized word. But so descriptive! 1mo
BookmarkTavern I love this word so much! 1mo
ncsufoxes When I was little my parents took me to McDonald‘s somewhere in NJ & they had a person in a Grimace costume. Apparently I was terrified. I vaguely remember it (I was probably 3 or 4). I remember there was a Hamburgler & Ronald. My kids thinks it‘s funny when my mom tells them I was scared of Grimace. 1mo
CBee @dabbe 😂😂😂 1mo
CBee @Amiable that‘s news to me and if true, that‘s just…..weird 😂 1mo
CBee @Amiable so apparently he was originally “Evil Grimace” and stole milkshakes. He‘s been described as a taste bud, the embodiment of a milkshake (🤷‍♀️), and just a lovable blob. I had no idea about any of this 😂 1mo
CBee @ncsufoxes what a story! I mean, I can get why he might be scary though 😂 Especially if confronted with him in real life. 1mo
TheBookHippie Why is a taste bud purple ? 1mo
CBee @TheBookHippie the ultimate question 😂😂🤪🤪 1mo

There are sooo many viable options these days…

And also — I ❤️ German. It‘s so strangely and perfectly specific.

Jari-chan Haha, I didn't know about that word 😂 Thanks for sharing! 1mo
AmyG I can think of many more to add to your list. 🤬 1mo

julesG @Jari-chan We hardly ever use it these days, right? Not even "Backpfeife" for a slap in the face. I think I had to explain it to my children because we read it in a Kästner book. 1mo
Amiable @julesG @jari-chan I think it needs to make a comeback! 😀 (edited) 1mo
Cuilin 😦 I needed a trigger warning for this post lol 😑 1mo
Jari-chan @julesG You're right. I know the word Backpfeife, but I guess it's a bit outdated. Even though it's such a beautiful word 😁 It's not used in Switzerland, though. 1mo
CBee This is 🔥 and also I‘m going to ask my German hubby about this word! 1mo
Amiable @Jari-chan @julesG My German teacher used it in class the other day when we were discussing how German words and phrases get “built.” She grew up in East Germany before the Berlin Wall came down. I think she‘s about 50. (edited) 1mo
Amiable @Cuilin Ha ha, sorry! 😬 1mo
TieDyeDude I don't know that a fist would be impactful enough... 1mo
squirrelbrain Love this! 😝 1mo
julesG @Amiable same, I also grew up in East Germany. German nouns are great, you can put nearly any amount of nouns together to make a new one. 1mo
dabbe @TieDyeDude 🎯🎯🎯 1mo
dabbe I felt both my fists curl up in readiness, reading this! 🤜🏻💙🤛🏻 1mo

Solipsism, solipsist, solipsistic. Say those words ten times fast 😂😂 Other tidbits: solipsism is also a term for a specific philosophy, a symptom of certain mental illnesses, and apparently can become a syndrome after periods of extreme isolation. And yes, this is Narcissus. The two are different but I thought it was close enough 😁 #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

AmyG Way too much of this in the world. 😩 2mo
TheBookHippie 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I do not understand selfishness. @AmyG 2mo

ImperfectCJ @TheBookHippie I understand it on a basic level, but those who accept it and even embrace it as a way to run a business or, say, govern a country, rather than seeing it as something to fight against in themselves...that's what I don't get. 2mo
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ well stated. 2mo
AmyG Exactly @ImperfectCJ 2mo
AnnCrystal
Perfect word for this chaotic world 👏🏼☺️👍🏼💝.
(edited) 2mo
CBee @ImperfectCJ agreed 👍🏻 2mo
Seabreeze_Reader This 'me-myself-and I' philosophy is becoming normalized, along with a lack of compassion. This is also disturbing, as I personally see this as an issue within neighborhoods, work environments, etc. (edited) 2mo
dabbe 🧡🎯🧡 2mo
BookmarkTavern I work with a couple people like this! 🫣 2mo
CBee @Seabreeze_Reader it‘s very disturbing, I agree. I‘ve had more grumpy driver encounters than ever just in the past week. It‘s a bit scary. It‘s almost as if people now have “permission” to bully and spew hate. 2mo
Seabreeze_Reader Well said @Cbee. 😣 We just need to find a way to stop it from eroding away our own sense of hopefulness and empathy toward others. {{{Hugs to everyone here.}}} (edited) 2mo
CBee @Seabreeze_Reader yes! Lots of hugs to you as well 💚💚💚 2mo
CBee @BookmarkTavern oh UGH I am so sorry!! 2mo

dabbe I want a golem as a protector! Mine would probably turn into a destructive one, though ... like Gollum in LOTR. 🩵💙🩵 4mo

CatLass007 I just finished the first three books of the Black Hat Bureau series, in which one of the main characters is a golem. Fun books! 4mo
lil1inblue @dabbe #ditto 🩵🤣 4mo
AlaMich This is a great novel with a golem as the MC. 4mo
CBee @dabbe hahaha mine probably would too. I‘d rather some Heinzelmännchen: https://germangirlinamerica.com/heinzelmannchen-the-elves-of-cologne/ 4mo
CBee @AlaMich I‘ve heard that‘s a good one! 4mo
CBee @JenniferEgnor one that wreaks havoc, I see 🫣🫣 4mo
CBee @CatLass007 cool! 4mo
dabbe @CBee @CBee Oh, yes please! How adorable! 🩵💙🩵 4mo
CatLass007 There was an episode of the X-Files that featured a golem. But when Dana Scully was narrating, she called it a gollum. 4mo
AnnCrystal 🆒☺️👍🏼💝. 4mo
StaceGhost I just saw a really cool seminar about golems in folklore! Love all the new books with golems coming out 4mo
CBee @CatLass007 I think the pronunciation is similar? I can see how one would pronounce it gollum. I‘m too much of an LOTR fan to make that mistake 😂🤓 4mo
CBee @StaceGhost that sounds awesome! 4mo
