Mehso-so

I did it! Finally finished the first selection of the #davidbowiebookclub chosen by his son Duncan Jones. Waited months for my reserve to arrive, and forced myself to finish. (I owed it to David. 😉) But let me say, it was torture! The author is a graduate of Cambridge and chose to write the majority of the book in the language of the early eighteenth century. I just knew it was eventually going to click with me, but it never did! 🙄

Tonton A lot of work but liked it 6y
DivineDiana @Tonton Glad it worked for you! 🙂 6y

Finally! @ValerieAndBooks I have had this book on reserve for six months! Only one book available in the system. It was the first choice for the #davidbowiebookclub organized by his son, Duncan.

ValerieAndBooks Finally!! After all that time! I hope you like it more than I did 😏 6y
DivineDiana @ValerieAndBooks Fingers crossed! 😊 6y
DivineDiana @ValerieAndBooks Started this! It turns out that I can not even renew it! I see what you mean. Archaic language. Small print. Not a page turner. 😬 6y
ValerieAndBooks Exactly 😜! I‘m surprised that you can‘t renew it at least once (if you wanted to, that is 😂)! 6y
DivineDiana @ValerieAndBooks I think because of holds. Determined to power through! 🙄 6y

This is the latest selection for the #DavidBowieBookClub . I was only able to find it at my library as part of a George Orwell collection of his writings. So, unfortunately, it was not the complete story of a young man who is down on his luck in Paris during the 1930‘s. Very atmospheric. The waiter in a fine restaurant was a coveted job. What went on behind the scenes was quite astounding!

LeahBergen Anthony Bourdain mentioned this as one of his favourite reads when I heard him speak once. 6y
ValerieAndBooks I started this a while ago, but abandoned it. I think I was just not in the mood for it. I‘ll have to try it again soon because you liked it 😊! 6y
DivineDiana @LeahBergen What a memorable experience! I can understand that he would relate to this book. So much information about what goes on in the kitchen of a restaurant! (edited) 6y
DivineDiana @ValerieAndBooks I think you would like it. Interesting characters and strong yet poetic writing. 6y

After seeing the David Bowie exhibit, I decided that I would try harder to keep up with the David Bowie Book Club. The tagged book is the one chosen for the current read, but my Library only had it as part of this collection. Not planning on reading the entire book. #davidbowiebookclub

readordierachel An excellent goal ❤ 6y

I had been wanting to read a James Baldwin book for some time. The push that I needed was the David Bowie Book Club started by David‘s son Duncan. It is a short book, divided into two parts. The first part is a letter to his nephew explaining to him what it is like to be a Black Man living in the United States. I thought of the book Ta Nehisi Coates wrote to his son. I wonder if this was the inspiration. Moving and insightful. #davidbowiebookclub

Cinfhen What you gonna read next for the #bowiebookclub 7y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen I haven‘t seen the next one posted yet. Still waiting on the first one from the Library. Mix up and now I‘m 11th in line! 7y
ValerieAndBooks Hawksmoor has been tough for me to get through anyway. The March choice was this tagged book, still waiting for it to arrive from Book Depository 7y
ValerieAndBooks Have not found out yet what April‘s Book is to be @DivineDiana @Cinfhen 7y

Listened to this one on audible the second in the #DavidBowieBookClub. I can see why it is a classic but I have mixed feelings on this one. I do want to read more by the author but not keen on being painted with a broad brush stroke when being asked to judge others individually on their merits.

Read this for the David Bowie book club after seeing an article on his son who is continuing his fathers appreciation of reading. A mystery thriller set in London with a historical twist, old churches and secret societies. #davidbowiebookclub this is on Bowie‘s list of top 100 books he loved.
