The Laura Secord Canadian Cook Book | Laura Secord Candy Shops Limited

Pickpick

I chose this cookbook for #foodandlit this month. It was originally published in 1966 so there are no food pictures but there are a lot of authentic Canadian dishes that sound delicious. I might finally make scotch eggs which I‘ve been wanting to do for awhile. 3.5⭐️

#5joysfriday

Thank you for the tag last week @CoffeeK8 ! And thank you for doing this @DebinHawaii ! I love reading everyone‘s joys each week 💛

kspenmoll I afore cranberry anything! Lovely list! 5d
tpixie Starbucks has a new cranberry drink. I think the spices are a little heavy on cinnamon, but it was a fun change from a strawberry refresher. Frozen cranberries in plain Greek yogurt is really good. ❤️❤️❤️ 5d
CoffeeK8 That lunch location looks so cozy for the fall! 5d

Daisey I love cranberries this time of year as well. I canned some juice last week and am planning on a batch of cranberry eggnog bread soon. 5d

DebinHawaii A lovely list of fall joys! 💛💛💛Cranberries are perfect this time of year! Thanks for joining in. 🤗 4d
mabell @kspenmoll Same! Do you have any favorite recipes? 3d
mabell @tpixie Oh I may have to try that! I rarely get the cold drinks (I‘m a big mocha fan!), but that one sounds fun for the season! And I never would have thought of frozen cranberries with yogurt! 3d
mabell @CoffeeK8 It was! They also had tower heaters that were very welcome 😄 3d
mabell @Daisey Wow - how did you can juice?? And please share your bread recipe! What a unique combo! I think cranberries would be perfect for balancing rich eggnog 3d
Daisey This is one of my favorite winter quick breads! https://www.yourcupofcake.com/eggnog-cranberry-bread/ 3d
Daisey I used the simpler method to can one batch of juice and it should be ready just in time for Christmas. https://practicalselfreliance.com/canning-cranberry-juice/ 3d
tpixie @mabell your wee one with the puppy is adorable 🥰 3d
tpixie @Daisey thanks for the recipe! I love both cranberries & eggnog! But I‘ve never had them together!!! 3d
mabell @tpixie They are my sweethearts! She loves him so much, and he loves her when food is involved 😂 2d
mabell @Daisey I‘ve printed the bread recipe! I just have to pick up a couple of ingredients & I‘m definitely making that this week! The simpler method sounds like a fun, tasty experiment! If I were more comfortable canning, I‘d do it. Once I‘ve done some canning, I‘ll try the drink too! I wonder how it would be with some spices added with the sugar. You‘ll have to report back on how this is too! (I don‘t remember if you mentioned you had made it before) 2d
Daisey @tpixie @mabell I hope you both enjoy the bread! As for the juice, I‘ve read about people making fruit blends and spiced versions (although you need to be careful to keep acid content because of water bathing), but I‘ve only made plain cranberry myself. 2d

60%. Thought it would higher.
I especially like fruit pies and crisps, and fudge which I can't make anymore because no one else in house eats it and I would have to eat whole pan.

Mehso-so

Cookbook time again! Got this one from the library because I was looking for a specific shortbread recipe but alas, wrong book by the right author. Otherwise lovely recipes and charming "wee stories", although as always, people who come from small places and either stay or come back give me screaming claustrophobia.

Bone In The Throat | Anthony Bourdain

Mehso-so

So Bourdain‘s fiction is straight mid except for his short story collection (tagged below) that I read last month and gave 4.25⭐️. That said, if you‘re a big fan (or a completist 🙋🏻‍♀️), it‘s worth a read. There are fun Easter eggs of places he discusses in his later memoirs. It is so strange that he always has to write himself into books even if it makes little sense to the plot. (A junkie chef in this one.) There were long scenes ⬇️

Megabooks Of the chef scoring heroin in bombed out LES buildings and then going to the methadone clinic. All Bourdain‘s real life. The book is ostensibly about a young son of a mob hustler who just wants to be a chef and how he‘s still tangled up in that life. The short story collection if you want to read (imo) the best of his fiction ➡️ 2w
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know he wrote fiction! 2w
TheBookHippie I liked the short story collection. 2w

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, gangster-y crime fiction. Plus a few graphic novels. 2w
Megabooks @TheBookHippie it‘s definitely the best of his fiction. He wrote it after the success of KC so I wonder if he had a better editor or maybe just understood his own voice better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

My mum‘s a huge Recipe Tin Eats fan, so I borrowed Nagi‘s first cookbook for her and figured I‘d give it a flip-through myself. Last night I tried the crispy garlic chicken thighs, and wow! Mine didn‘t go especially crispy and they were a wildly different colour from Nagi‘s (I suspect some heavy filtering was involved with the official picture), but the flavour‘s awesome. I‘m glad I‘ve got three thighs left for tonight.
