An exciting night of intrigue, murder & theft for Conan in a desert oasis town inhabited by cannibals & strange cults.

An opportunity for Howard to demonstrate some of his worst racism, with a seasoning of predatory sexism. Apologists say it's of its time: it's still 💩

My 4⭐ rating is based solely on the fantasy/adventure elements I read Howard for, & that while Conan is, famously, savage, he also isn't as thick as he's sometimes portrayed.

dabbe Wow! What a cover, too! 😱❣️😱 1mo
Bookwomble @dabbe It's the 1935 magazine cover in which the story was originally published. The character shown is Zabibi, who is described as being mixed-race and brown skinned, but I guess an accurate depiction may not have sold as well to the target demographic (hence, also, White Jesus? 🤔). Anyway, that aside, the artwork for Weird Tales was frequently incredible. 1mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Thanks for the info! The colors are so vivid and jarring at the same time, too! 🤩 1mo

I‘m a sucker for “what if...” scenarios, and this book is a high watermark in the genre. In a brilliant set up, Conan finds an amnesiac Diana, champion of a gladiator pit, defeating all challengers. The Cimmerian recognizes Diana as childhood crush from another tribe he thought long dead. They unite to combat witches bent on world conquest. Will they succeed? Will Diana regain her memories? Who is the mysterious girl from Conan‘s youth?

Gail Simone won me over with Clean Room. This team up already had the hook firmly in my mouth because of Conan appearing, but this is just bloody, nerdy fun with some surprisingly deep moments.

Bookwomble "Who is Bêlit?" The wildest she-devil unhanged. Unless I read the signs awrong, it was her butchers who destroyed that village on the bay. May I some day see her dangling from the yard-arm! She is called the queen of the black coast. She is a Shemite woman, who leads black raiders. They harry the shipping and have sent many a good tradesman to the bottom." 6y

"The moon hung in the shadowy sky, painting the jungle red and black; above the sleepers glimmered the crimson blossoms, like splashes of blood. Then the moon went down and the eyes of the necromancer were red jewels set in the ebony of #night." #QuotsyJan19

Charming, though deeply lightweight, fantasy adventure. Conan and Wonder Woman are not what most folks would call a natural crossover, but Gail Simone‘s love of pulp fantasy history makes this one work better than it should. If you have a thing for Conan comics, you‘ll dig this.

BY CROM! Marvel announced today that, coming this January, Conan is coming back home.

Its been 25 years since we've had a Marvel Conan comic and while I have enjoyed his adventures with other companies (mostly Darkhorse) I couldn't be happier with this news of coming back to Marvel. Jason Aaron will be writing at least the first 12 issue (a full year) so that's just icing on the cake. 🤘

Its got weak villains and plot holes patched over with "uh, magic" but its funny, light and shies away from the sexual assault that Diana would have faced in that world. A little too bloody for kids but barely more than a PG 13.

The original Robert E. Howard Conan stories are really great, so much better than the various films/comics/novels others wrote later on. Howard‘s views on race are a little too close to those of his friend H.P. Lovecraft for my liking (this one is essentially a ‘savage Indians attack innocent white settlers‘ tale), but he was an excellent writer and his Cimmerian barbarian is one of pulp literature‘s finest creations.
