Bess Crawford is an English nurse serving in World War I. I‘m not sure why, although by posting this I‘m sure someone will explain it to me, but the English refer to nurses as “Sisters.” Bess served in France and cared for a pilot who was seriously burned in a crash. When his wife is murdered he feels he has nothing to live for and kills himself. Bess is drawn deep into the search for a murderer and becomes obsessed with finding (cont)⬇️

My usual favorite genre is urban fantasy. Lately I have been enjoying historical mysteries. Right now I‘m on a roll.

This is the first book in a new to me mystery series by Charles Todd. Bess Crawford is a nurse in World War I. A dying soldier requests that she personally deliver a message to his brother, which she does. The brother and his mother are brokenhearted about the death of the oldest child. But they aren‘t concerned with the message. Bess continues to investigate because she feels that the dead soldier‘s final wish should be honored. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I love the entire Bess Crawford series. 💜

As always, it‘s wonderful to check into the Bess Crawford world. This time she‘s in Ireland for a wedding during a very volatile, dangerous time following WW1. The groom and his best man go missing, and Bess is torn between leaving for her own safety and solving the mystery. I enjoyed this addition but was a bit disappointed that the Bess/Simon relationship is so slow being resolved. I‘m anxious to see how that plays out. 4.5/5⭐️ 🔻

4⭐️ I enjoyed this one more than the first book in the series, even though I read them almost two years apart. The case seemed believable and I liked the character growth in Bess herself. Picked this one up at a local bookstore. I haven‘t read the first one and I‘m hoping this one can be read as a stand alone. Couldn‘t pass it up.

My son has been tasked with finding books I want to read. Today we visited Windsor library which is housed in a gorgeous brick building. Windsor & Wethersfield vie to be the first English settlement in CT. Miss Martha S. Clapp and Mr. H.E. Sawyer, who was the principal of the Public High School at the time, opened a subscription library. It was housed in different spaces until 1901 when this building was purchased.

In the latest addition to the always-enjoyable Bess Crawford series, Bess gets an inside look at the "Irish Trouble" in 1919. With the same vividness used to describe the Front in earlier books, the author brings to life the rifts and unease of Ireland shortly before independence. Bess doesn't know whom she can trust.

(Note: There are some references to Romany/Travellers that are period-appropriate but jarring because of their bigotry.)

Two of my favorite mystery series had new additions this summer - Bess Crawford & Kate Burkholder - and they came in at the library at the same time!! This one wasn't my favorite of the Bess Crawford series as it felt a little meandery and not as urgent as the circumstances should have, if that makes sense. However, I really like that the authors have decided to continue Bess's story beyond WWI & it was interesting to learn more about what was⬇️
