Pickpick

What begins as a late 1970s meet-cute between a girl who is starting over in the city and an ex-hippy locksmith evolves into a very strange, manipulative-yet-endearing romance/psychodrama. John Hersey was an under-appreciated novelist. His prose is tight, beautiful, funny, and precise. When you read it you feel that no matter where the plot goes, your time is being well spent.

Last read of 2023, and while there were parts which were definitely cringeworthy and haven‘t aged well, there was also this:
“That‘s what kids are, Jerry—all heart. Big round blueberry hearts. The trouble is—the older you get, the more you grow away from your heart. Like a tree. It gets deeper and deeper inside you, more and more hidden.”
Here‘s to finding your heart again in 2024! Happy New Year!

BoleyBooks I believe I saw the film adaptation of this starring Liza Minnelli. 😊 (edited) 10mo

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

Bedtime reading. Good-night! (PS: This book belonged to my mother. I love seeing her handwriting on the bookplate.)

marleed Very cool - I love seeing the hand writing of my parents and grandparents. I have an the top side of an old shirt box that I can‘t throw away because my grandmother wrote a note on the inside of it - her cursive was so unique! 2y

I wasn‘t sure how I was going to review this unique book. But when the final sentence is “Then he went to the icebox for the bacon, which will always be with us.” I had to give it a pick. It‘s a quick-ish read, and holds the interest. The form is unique, and you have to pay attention to keep the timeline straight, but it rewards that attention. #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

Keep the Change | Thomas McGuane

#changes #BloomingBibliophiles John Starling shunned the Montana ranch his dad wanted him to work on & take over one day. John, went East , became an artist, but thing just aren‘t working out.McGuane writes complex characters, often people who burn all their bridges but end up having to try to repair them.McGuane was pretty popular in the 1980s , I always appreciated his strong, conflicted characters, often people who know better but do it anyway.
