Third book for #ChristmasCrimeChallenge

Amelia and Emerson‘s now grown children take more of the center stage. Ramses‘ past as a secret agent comes back to haunt him and is it possible that the Master Criminal is still alive? Or is someone masquerading in his place? And lady journalist Margaret Minton returns to interfere and poke her nose in.

Lots of fun, romance and adventure and Emerson cursing. 😂

Back in Egypt with the Emersons in 1916 or so who are up to their usual tricks of solving crime and making trouble. I‘m not a huge fan of the Ramses/Nefret storyline - too much “romance” for me, but I can tolerate it because the rest is just fun.

bookandbedandtea It's been a while since I dipped into this series but I'm tempted now because I LOVE the Emersons, especially Amelia herself and Ramses. I never really warmed up to Nefret but I didn't find it affected my enjoyment of the books. 💗 2w
Ruthiella @bookandbedandtea I do love this series. It‘s about as close to romance as I am comfortable with. One of the things I love most about Amelia and Emerson is the steadfastness of their relationship…no will they or won‘t they - they just are. 2w
DGRachel Angsty Ramses is my least favorite Ramses. 2w

Ruthiella @DGRachel Me too! I‘m just not built for that kind of tension! 😂 2w
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella Yes! I love that they encounter (and create) all kinds of drama but their relationship is never in question! Communication issues drive me nuts. 2w
bookandbedandtea @DGRachel Yes there are a couple books where he's pretty angsty and those are not my favorites. 2w
DGRachel @bookandbedandtea I made the mistake of binging the whole series in an audio reread and I was ready to throw my phone across the room during the teen/20s Ramses nonsense. 😂 2w
Ruthiella @DGRachel 🤣🤣🤣 I have spaced out reading them over years and it still grates! (edited) 2w

The plot was a bit convoluted and took a bit to "dig in" but honestly, by now, I am in just for Amelia Peabody, Emerson, Nefret, Ramses, David, Abdul and the rest.
The audiobooks are totally fun.

Ruthiella They are so fun for the personality and growth of the characters. For me, the actual mystery plots are secondary. Or maybe even tertiary, since I also like the historical settings usually as well. (edited) 3w
CarolynM What @Ruthiella said. I love this one for the first look at grown up Ramses. 3w
Smarkies @Ruthiella @CarolynM totally agree. And grown up Ramses is great. 3w

Spinster Amelia has decided to take advantage of her inheritance & travel across Egypt w/ a young woman she rescues. What follows is an adventure of archaeological discoveries, possible romances, & The Mummy‘s Curse, of course.

A very, VERY slow first half, but once the story got started it kept going! Amelia & Evelyn are delightful together & the scene setting was fun. Lots of condescending English racism, but not as bad as I expected.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Ruthiella This is a fun series. Some of the racism goes away with subsequent books because, I suspect, the author was learning too. 2mo

Was the mystery satisfying? Yes! Was the banter delicious? Absolutely! Was the racism freaking heinous? 💯 I'd love to continue with this series and I get that it is a product of its time (70s era writer with Victorians cavorting through Egypt) but I just can't stomach it.

Most of my #ForTheLoveofBooks reading seems to be finishing books I was already reading 😂 Still, it was good to finish these. I've started The Midnight Witness, but I'm not sure if I'll get it finished today or not as I'm getting ready to leave for work, followed by potential family shenanigans (my family isn't always good at deciding ahead of time 😆) @TheSpineView

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 This was another one of Amelia Peabody‘s fun archaeological adventures in Egypt which, of course, turned into a murder mystery. Amelia also is again hot on the trail of the Master Criminal. The last couple of chapters didn‘t verge on the edge of the ridiculous, the author took a cheerful leap in with both feet. I teetered back and forth between laughter and embarrassment at the silliness of it all.

Like Emerson, I was a bit tired of hearing about the MASTER CRIMINAL but honestly these books are just such good fun that even the MC drama stayed pretty entertaining, even if the ending feels rather ridiculous. Ramses is still spoiled, but incrementally less obnoxious in this one. Overall I'm enjoying my reread of this series, but looking forward to the later books where Ramses is older and more a part of the team.

Ruthiella Agree that there are some bits that wear less well earlier in the series. But I think the underlying solidity of the Emersons as a family unit carries the reader through that (she writes 11 books in 😂!). 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - Definitely so - one of the things I love most is the close familiar bond between them all. I read the whole series about ten years ago, so it's been fun to revisit them all, knowing that they get better as they go 😂 5mo

bookandbedandtea I also agree that I love the bond the Emersons have and that the series gets better once Ramses is old enough to have his own storylines. 5mo

An antiquities dealer visits Emerson requesting compensation for a forged scarab allegedly sold by David from his grandfather's collection, which never existed. Discreet enquiries reveal that the impersonator has sold fake antiquities to other dealers. Who is trying to vilify David and why?

I haven't read any of the Amelia Peabody books for a couple of years and I'd forgotten how funny Amelia's narrative “voice“ is.

CarolynM So witty! As are all Elizabeth Peters books. 5mo
