“There is a voice inside of you that whispers all day long, I feel that this is right for me, I know that this is wrong.”

This poem is about a narrator who listens to the voice inside their head and decides to follow it. This poem teaches the great lesson that kids should listen to their inner voice and trust their instincts

Houseboy | Ferdinand Oyono

3/5
Written in 1956, it's a novel about the life of a houseboy under colonialism.
From the first pages we learn the tragic end of the houseboy, then we get to read his diary: how he came to be a houseboy, his daily life, etc.
Segregation, hypocrisy, racism, black/white relationships are the main themes.
It's a level B1 read in French, some words/phrases may be difficult for a non-native.

Started this after seeing a discussion video on @shawnmooney ‘s BookTube channel about the author. It explores the complexities and nuances of human struggle for survival, contemplates morality in a world corrupted by colonialism, and asks, “What does it mean to be free?” A book which does not seek to provide easy answers. I took many notes and underlined a lot. Destined to be a top read of the year for me.

shawnmooney Best news I‘ve heard all day! I can‘t wait to try this one myself! 1y

Bound to Violence | Yambo Ouologuem
post image

Last November, I read La plus secrète mémoire des hommes (Prix Goncourt 2021) by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, inspired by the disappearance of Yambo Ouologuem from literary life after his acclaimed novel “Le devoir de violence“ (Bound to Violence) was found to contain many plagiarised passages (arguably, as part of intertextual plays rather than literary theft) and removed from shelves. It was republished in 2018, and I am now reading it.
