I am loving this series from Bernard Ollivier about his treck across the Silk Road. This all happened in the early 2000‘s but I believe the books were only recently translated into English. In this part of the journey he picks up where he left off in Turkey then travels across Iran and Turkmenistan. My favorite parts are when he connects with locals although it is very apparent this is never a trip a woman would be able to make.

I didn‘t think I‘d get my full 2 miles in before what‘s left of Debby hit us. It held off though and there‘s a breeze! Even skipping the Olympics tonight so I can sit outside and enjoy the wind. Enjoying this audiobook as well! I listened to the first in the series last month for #FoodAndLit

Bookwormjillk @TheBookHippie I read a Michigan book this year already, but I am starting to think about next year if you have a recommendation! No worries on my book- whenever you get around to it. 3mo

I thoroughly enjoyed this travelogue describing a Norwegian journalist‘s travels through #Turkmenistan, #Kazakhstan, #Tajikistan, #Kyrgyzstan, and #Uzbekistan. She describes some of the travel itself, basic history, political aspects, culture, and personal stories of people she met.

julieclair I know absolutely nothing about any of these countries. Added to my stack! (edited) 12mo
Daisey @julieclair This book has been on my TBR since I saw it posted for #ReadingAsia2021 for the same reason, but I just fairly recently found the audio and finally got to it. Definitely a worthwhile read! 12mo
BarbaraBB This was so good indeed! 12mo

jlhammar Definitely want to get to this someday as I thought Fatland's The Border was fantastic! 12mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB @jlhammar I‘ll definitely need to add her other books to my someday list. 11mo
BarbaraBB I did too. Unfortunately that day hasn‘t come yet for me 😊 but I still want to read her! 11mo

I listened to the section of this book about Kazakhstan and part of the Tajikistan section this weekend on my walks and continue to find it incredibly interesting. Additionally, I needed an excuse to share this fun up close photo of Luthien enjoying her walk.

This book has been on my TBR since I first saw it reviewed here and in my Audible library for a bit. I finally started listening on a beautiful fall walk with Luthien today and enjoyed the first section on Turkmenistan.

Mehso-so

#readaroundtheworld #turkmemistan Not badly done graphically and it did have some insights but I was put off by the author gently mocking the Turkmenistans for their assumptions about Americans. It was humorous and I am sure that they did believe all Americans were rich and routinely got into gun fights but nevertheless…

#readaroundtheworld #turkmenistan I found this graphic novel for Turkmenistan. It looks interesting.

TorieStorieS I‘m headed out shopping in a few minutes and am hoping to find a book for this month‘s country at our HPB! 🤞 1y
Currey Good luck! HPB stores are very dangerous… 1y

It was really interesting read about part of the world no one is really talking about. I've made some notes and I'm keen to learn more.

Slightly disappointing. I couldn't empathise with the narrator (a good part of the novel is taken with descriptions of past and present “romantic“ encounters with women who are never fully characterised, which was rather unpleasant), and the translation was awkward.
