Despite the title, in the end this is a hopeful book. It‘s about Veronika who is suicidal and the people she meets in a mental hospital. Now that all sounds very dark but this book is really about the light that can shine in the dark places. More modern fable than gritty realism but more plot than The Alchemist. I read it a long time ago so interested to hear if others find it‘s held up well.
Louise I also read this years ago, and I still think of "vitriol" as an illness! In a way, I feel that in later books, Coelho has become a bit of a parody of himself. But this little book packs a nice punch. 7y
Centique @Louise I feel pretty similarly! I think there are people who shy away from Coelho who might really like this one. 7y
Cinfhen I read the Alchemist recently and was not impressed! Same with his other novels 7y

Centique @Cinfhen I never felt the need to try any more after The Alchemist! This one was a gift though and I did really like it. Still, no need to go back there, you‘ve more than given him a chance! 😉🙃 7y
Cinfhen Thanks! I feel like #ThreeStrikesYoureOut 😝 (edited) 7y
Centique @Cinfhen true! 😂great hashtag that! 7y
Cathythoughts I‘m not a fan of his either. But I like your words about light shining in dark places 💫 7y
Centique @Cathythoughts thank you lovely! 🌸😊 7y
BarbaraBB Well played! I really liked this book when I read it about 5 years ago. I also hated The Alchemist 😉 7y
Centique @BarbaraBB oh good - my theory that people would like this one might hold up then! 😊 7y
BarbaraBB I think so, they are really different - this one is more down to earth, if I remember well 😀😉? The Alchemist certainly wasn‘t! 7y
