Can you come up with not-so-heavy books, more uplifting or positive than I usually read. Still want to have a solid story, no harlequins or mindless reads, if you catch my drift. Everything I want to read is so heavy nonfiction, murders, world going to hell kind of books, therefore I need help!

AshleyHoss820 When I need a brain break, I usually go with the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich or some sweeping epic, like How Green Was My Valley or The Thorn Birds. 😊 7y
rubyslippersreads ❤️❤️❤️ How Green Was My Valley and would also recommend 7y

knittedgnome These are a fun light read! The base of True Blood but so very different than the show. 7y
Lisaw13 I just finished this one and really enjoyed it 7y
GlassAsDiamonds If non-fiction, you could try any of Gretchen Rubin‘s or Amy Krouse Rosenthal‘s Textbook or Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life. Victoria Finlay‘s Colour And Travels through the Jewelry Box are also lovely non-fiction. 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Lisaw13 me too in the end but I only made it past Chapter 5 because of the Buddy Read.... otherwise I would have slapped Monty and thrown the book out the window! 7y
Lisaw13 @GlassAsDiamonds Monty could get annoying then I remembered he was 18 and I did find him endearing 7y
arubabookwoman Didn‘t think I would like a Viking book, but #TheLongShips is great and v. funny. Also loved #LondonBelongsToMe, #ThatOldAceInTheHole, and the #Poldark series is v. good. 7y
Ranchan Still about murder, but the Father Brown stories are also pretty lighthearted! 7y
Aimeesue Or anything Terry Pratchett. Don't start at the beginning of the Discworld series, though, because those aren't his best, and you don't really need to read the whole series in order anyway. The witches books are fabulous, and Word Sisters is one of his best. If you like mysteries or police procedural steps, any of his City Watch books are great. 7y
BookishMe Every chapter was hoot with 7y
BookishMe A Gentleman in Moscow (my fave for this year) & Storied Life of A J Fikry is so rereadable ;D Alexander Mccall Smith and this is whimsically hilarious hope you find that right book for now! 7y
BookishMe AMS *is my favorite writer 7y

Tove_Reads @oOArankaOo Never read them, maybe it‘s time... 🙂 7y
batsy I sound like a broken record everytime someone wants to read a book like this, but my go-to is this one 7y
Aimeesue @Tove_Reads I'm not a reader of fantasy novels, really, but Pratchett is sort of beyond that. More satire + humanism + moral dilemmas + humour. Pratchett's what I reach for when I'm in a reading slump or need a laugh. Great palate cleansers! (edited) 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Lisaw13 true, but then I also found 18 slightly unlikely for the character & felt like he‘d been aged down to get it into YA...? 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Tove_Reads 😊😊😊😊 I like non-fiction but have a really low creepy/ bleak threshold !! 😊😊😊 7y
Tove_Reads @Aimeesue Never read his books, because fantasy, but apparent they‘re not that far out there then?! 7y
Tove_Reads @batsy Will have to check it out, thanks! 7y
Aimeesue @Tove_Reads There are certainly a lot of fantastic *elements*, like witches, and wizards (bumbling, ineffective ones, basically) and trolls, but it's really used satirically, to reflect on human foibles in a flat out funny way. Pratchett and Gaiman are pretty much the only "fantasy" authors I read, because they both have a foot solidly in the human. 7y
Chrissyreadit @Tove_Reads Do you like historical fiction? I like Susannah Kearsley - one of my favs is The Winter Sea. For lighter, I just read Fangirl, and although not completely light I loved Eleanor and Park- both by Rainbow Rowell. I like Sara Addison Allen for light also - some magical realism. And if you are interested in American History nonfiction, Women‘s Diaries of the Westward Journey was good. I loved The Color of Water by James McBride. 7y
Tove_Reads @Chrissyreadit Historical fiction is one of my fave genres. Magical realism is my least fave. Thanks, will check them out! 7y
