The housemaid series are the most popular by far, but there is not a single stand alone of hers I‘ve read that doesn‘t keep me glued until I know what happens, and even when I think I know… I don‘t

It had been YEARS since I read this (I think I read it in high school), and I remembered so little, it was like reading it for the first time! I know I watched the miniseries way back when, and I also remember very little of that—so it was all new!)

I was so impressed by the depth of spiritual reflection and growth explored through Christy‘s perspective here. There‘s a real wrestling with faith & vocation, and with the complexities of how to ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …serve & help the “disadvantaged” from a position of both ignorance & privilege. Marshall‘s characters are vivid and both lovable (Fairlight and Miss Alice) and frustrating (there were so many times I wanted to shake condescending David!).

The ending felt very abrupt, though—in spite of how long the book is, the final resolution really needed more fleshing out. That aside, this was a very worthwhile re-read ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …(and it‘s got me wanting to re-read Marshall‘s Julie, which I also read as a teen, but remember much more vividly!).

Thank you to @TheAromaofBooks for hosting this buddy read in November/December—I can‘t believe it took me this long to actually write a review 🤦🏻‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. I was surprised at how engaging I found it. However, I did feel like the story lost momentum when the pandemic swept through, and, like you, I wanted more resolution, especially regarding the romance. Even a brief epilogue would have been nice! 3d
Butterfinger My grandmother loved Catherine Marshall. I think it is time to reread A Man Called Peter. 3d
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yes, definitely! There were little hints throughout the book as to how the romance would end up, but because of how abrupt the ending was, it almost felt like a bait and switch. I wanted more of a resolution for David and more development with Neil. Even so, it was such a good read. 3d

Another twisty thriller written in true McFadden style with each chapter bouncing from character to character creating a fast paced read. Read this in a day, definitely gripping, but the subject matter...a little more difficult to stomach if I'm honest.
Having read 3 of McFadden's books, I can see a lot of similarities in her characters and storyline. Not saying it's a bad thing just might start to make her books quite predictable.

It is a very very foggy frosty Sunday morning here is Southend. We have escaped the snow (thank goodness) and have had some cold days. This morning was a beautiful walk in the Frost and fog. Home now with a big cup of tea and a thriller to dive into

My cover isn't super exciting, so I give you Kitty as compensation 😂

I remember enjoying this book as a teen but wasn't sure how it would hold up as an adult - but I found it completely engaging. Christy is just a likable character, so it makes the whole story work. She's genuine in her efforts to understand the world around, and I related so much to her desire to make her childhood faith something tangible and real. This is definitely a ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Christian-y book, but there is plenty of story beyond that. This is a fascinating look at the backwoods in the early 20th century loosely based on the author's mother's experiences. I did feel like the story lost some momentum when it veered from the classroom/school experiences into the epidemic, and the ending felt rather abrupt, but on the whole I really enjoyed this one.

julieclair I loved this book. So glad to have found it through #RandomClassics! Now I‘d like to hunt down the tv series. 1mo

Librarybelle Kitty! I‘m still reading and am enjoying my reread of this one! 1mo
Sace I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I first read it in my early 20s and it didn‘t make much of an impression (all I could remember was that everyone had eye infections). I think I got a lot more out of it this time. I can see this being one I reread. 1mo

Teresereading I finished it yesterday. A fascinating read, and I loved the Dr Neil storyline. Slightly disappointed to read that was 'faction'. It's based on Marshall 1mo
Teresereading Question- if it's based on Marshall' grandmother's stories are all the characters fictional (or composites)? The Disclaimer says ' any resemblance to ...etc' but the opening chapter when 'Christy' revisits Cutters Gap was so evocative. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Teresereading - This article has some details of the differences between Marshall's real-life grandma and fictional Christy - https://www.appalachianhistory.net/2011/11/christy-and-leonora-city-girl-country... - I think what she did was take many of the stories her grandma shared from working at the mission and then made up parts to make a more dramatic narrative. MacNeil and Miss Alice are both fictional, but both are important characters⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to help Christy learn and grow. Probably the biggest difference is that Christy is much more “citified“ than Marshall's grandma, who also grew up somewhat impoverished and in the country. 1mo

I took this from my mom‘s bookshelf years ago and finally read it with #RandomClassic

Turns out this is a 1967 copy that belonged to my dad‘s mom. I‘m glad she stuck an address label inside so I‘d see it all these years later.

I really enjoyed learning about this time and community which I had little knowledge of before.

And what an ending!!!!

I could not put this down. It was addicting and fast-paced and twisty. But the last like 2-3 pages…what? How? It made flip back to previous chapters, trying to figure stuff out, and I still have questions.
